Luis 95_NEON

Hi !

I newbe here and i'll make my newbi question.

I have a 95 dodge neon 5-speed DOHC whit no tach. I start having problems on the Speedo, isnt working, sometimes it bouces a bit not work at all, the ECU says the VSS is faulty, but i heard someone on neons.org that 1rst gen Neons has troubles on the soldering points on the instrument cluster. Did some know about it ??.

I want to do that soldering stuff before VSS change.

And here the newbe question:

I made a search on the web about install an aftremarket tach on my Neon, i found nothing, nada. So i read the Haynes Repair Manual and the Electrical diagram shows a wire for the tach, i wondering if i can swap the W/tach instrument cluster from another neon and install it on my car ????
I guess 96+ neons have tach, not sure.

Or someone have a how to installing aftermarket tach ???

As far as the Speedo, mine did the same thing. Turns out a squirrell was living in my engine and chewed my speedo harness up. Lol, now I know it might be uncommon, but you might wanna check it out before dropping tons of cash on sensors and stuff.

I have a 96 neon and my speedo went out too (it has no tach BTW).

Removing the dash cover and the cluster assy I got it working by cleaning the contacts.

It came up after shoving and pushing it in a few (check by having the ignition key right before the engine starts, the fuel indicator jiggles whenever the cluster feels electricity)

Every so often it goes out on a highway and I just punched the cluster bottom and it's on again.

My '96 Neon Speedo with Tach and my Dad's '96 Neon w/o Tach both went bad. I took out the cluster on both and resoldered the contacts going to the connector and it fixed them both up perfectly. That was a few years ago now and still working fine. Good luck.

I need to know about this soldering the connections on the instrument cluster. My cluster hasn't been working for a couple weeks now. Can someone please give me the info on "how to" do it. i can't find anything about it on neons.org

I used to be a soldering technician so I hope this helps. First get a Haynes Neon repair manual, found at local auto parts store this should help with any questions regarding instrument cluster removal. Second buy a soldering iron and some solder, preferably with some extra flux. Next all you need to do is solder the wires. You do this by touching the hot iron, considering it is plugged in, to the solder and then quickly touching the iron with the heated solder to the wire connections. The solder may ball up and look tacky so that is why you should get some extra flux, it helps to make the solder flow smoother. Finally clean with alcohol. The iron and everything you need can also be found in your local auto store and should cost about ten bucks.

I have everything to solder with, and am very familiar with removing the cluster. The part i need help with is, which connections should i be looking to solder? Is there a site that shows what needs to be done?
