smoke from under the hood?oraphus 10-06-2003, 03:01 PM I have a 93 Probe GT, 5sp. Last night when i stopped at a light i noticed smoke pouring out of the right side of my engine compartment... I think i also heard some kind of a whining noise.. Have not had a chance to look at it yet.. but does anyone have any idea what it could be.. from the limited chance that i had last night to look at it the onle thing i saw there was a timing belt. It seemed like the smoke was coming from somwhere inside, under the right side of the engine. Does anyone have any idea what this problem might be? thanks in advance oraphus 10-09-2003, 01:02 PM okay i think i figured it out.. i believe my alternator seized... any idea on how hard/expensive it is to replace the altrnator either yourself or a shop do it? Sexy beast 10-09-2003, 01:14 PM alternater is like $50 at Auto Zone, the jobs pretty easy--- if you can wipe your own arse then you can change it yourself. :smokin: oraphus 10-09-2003, 01:46 PM whipe my own ass???! wow wow wow.... one thing at time.... i am just one man and can only do so much. Ass whiping will be my next project :silly: Sexy beast 10-09-2003, 01:50 PM make sure you don't overtighten the tension on the belt because you can ruin the waterpump. :smokin: SphinxMunkey 10-10-2003, 01:24 PM make sure you don't overtighten the tension on the belt because you can ruin the waterpump. :smokin: ha rofl i killed my 900 turbo saab by overtigtening the belt... bad idea... but now i have a 93 ptg so i'm happy Sexy beast 10-13-2003, 02:14 PM Yeah, its a wide spread misconception. Most guys think "Tighter is Better" including yours trully, but with experience you learn. The repairs on the Saab must have been expensive. :smokin: oraphus 10-14-2003, 06:09 PM @ autozone they are 155 for remanufactured one, i see i can find an alternator at a junkyard for 50. One autorepair shop told me its 1.5 hours of work... i am under the impression that he is BSing me or doenst know any better. Can anyone give me the run down or point me to a desc of how to replace the alternator on a probe and what all do i need to do.. including on how to loosen and tighten the belt. I've never worked on an alterntor before. I'd like to loosen the belt first and make sure that the Alternator is seized. From what i understand i should not be able turn it if it's seized. trvkell 10-23-2003, 02:31 AM @ autozone they are 155 for remanufactured one, i see i can find an alternator at a junkyard for 50. To replace the Alt is harder than most but easier than some. Asuming you have the 2.5lL V-6 this is how it goes. You will have to remove the radiator, it will give you clearance to pull the alt. out. Then disconnect your battery cable then disconnect the connections from the back of the alt. You then remove the top Alt. bolt, for the bottom bolt it just needs to be loosened. The bottom alt housing is sloted for easy removal. Like I stated taking out the radiator is the hardest part of doing the whole job. It took me less than 45mins. to replace mine. Good luck Travis oraphus 10-30-2003, 06:25 PM did it, took me a while but worht it... runs like a champ now, thanks vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
