I am new to the board and thought that someone would help me out. I just bought a 1997 Grand Prix GT about 2 weeks ago. I am driving it around and then all of the sudden the car just dies. Then it takes a while to start. It has happened like 6 times and each time it takes longer and longer to start.
I have taken it to two different garages and they cannot find anything wrong (by putting their little computer on it). It is under warranty for about 500 more miles so i want to get it figured out.
If anyone has any information to help me out i would be very gratefull.

Sounds like a fuel delivery problem?? Have you/they checked out the fuel filter or pump??

Also have them check the fuel pump resistor. As soon as ClubGP is back up I'll post some links on the Fuel Pump Resistor issue. www.clubgp.com search "fuel pump resistor"

You would think that these shops would do more than just check the computer. But, if they dont see anything wrong on the PCM atleast you know that it's ok.

I to have a 97 Grand Prix GT with similar problems. I noticed 2 other threads from July & Aug that were also about similar problems.
1) My car will hesitate slightly and the tach will drop to zero. this has been going on for what seems like a year plus. The service engine light would come on every once in a while.
2) Recently the service engine light is on nearly 1/2 the time. If the engine is warm it has also started to stall out and/or give me a hard time turning over.

These other threads mentioned similar problems. The threads were from July & Aug 03, but no one ever came back to confirm what the final fix was. I had my car with a mechanic today and he diag'd it as a crankcase sensor that was probably faulty. He said that was what he computer codes told him, but when he reset the codes they didn't come back, so he didn't replace it. Of course later in the evening the lights came back as well as the hard starts. I'm guessing its because that the problem only appears when the engine is warm. Not from a cold start.

I've sent T_Tow and email (GPTSLEEPER DIDN'T RECEIVE EMIALS) to see if he could confirm that was the cause of his problems. Don please let me know if you get a fix to your problems. I'm tempted to just try to replace the crankcase sensor to see what happens.

I had a very simular problem. The dealer replaced the coolant temperature sensor. the sensor was sensing the car was getting hot when it wasn't, the sensor automatically shuts the car off to protect it from damage. I had it installed 2 days ago...so far so good......good luck!

I have a 1997 Grand Prix SE. I've been driving down the road and it will just die on me for no reason. Luckily it starts right back up with no problem. It did it a month ago 2 different times. It ran fine after that up until yesterday. Now it's done it 3 times in the past day. I think the car has probably been hot (drive 25 miles to work) when it's died each time. Anyone find a cure for this problem yet?

Well, when the car dies on you is an intake problem. Could be air or fuel. First of all get the TC's on your car(that is a good start, you got a SES once in while). I am pretty sure it will tell you that is fuel or air related. Could be the MAP sensor, MAF Sensor(if so equiped), Fuel Pump, Fuel Resistor or clogged fuel filter.
As Ripn12s suggested since always, check the cheapest first like the fuel filter, Fuel Pump. There is a small valve on the injectors rail where you can attach a Fuel pressure gauge. Without starting the car put the key on and check the pressure reading. If it is below 50psi or the needles jerk your problem is fuel related. If it is ok and the SES has no relation to intake then check MAP Sensor, MAF Sensor, Crank position Sensor. All these tell the ECU(PCM) when each injector has to open, when the spark comes in and so forth. If this cycle get interrupted or altered(by a faulty sensor) then the car will stall.
