Here's a Portland, OR craigslist for-sale posting which should answer some questions...
I'm in the market for a Subaru of similar vintage but I can dream about the Beemer.... BTW many folks have had great experiences with newer Legacys, Outbacks etc. in the snow...

118,000 miles, silver, 2 dr, automatic, brand new Goodyear Eagle tires, sun roof, full time all wheel drive, cruise control, electric side mirrors. Lots of preventative work done 11,000 miles ago including: new head gasket and timing belt, 3 sets bearings, struts, entire exhaust system, brakes. Car is in great condition inside and out. Pass thru ski bag; single CD player with removable front. A/C doesnt' work (need new condenser), and fan only blows on 4th power setting, but it gets damn toasty in the winter!
also, new set of 4 Blizzak Snow tires on BMW steel rims so you don't have to switch your rims, just change the whole set. cost is $500, including rims. this car is immaculate in the snow, absolutely amazing.
please contact by email at this time as i am traveling but will be back in PDX very shortly.
