Well, that all depends. What was the last year they produced the GTO?

They made it from 1964 to 1974. I know you want to argue, but the real musclecar era had ended.

In that case I agree, after 71' it went downhill. Stupid gas prices.

ahhh I Like you already!!!!

Yes the goat my fav. muslce car. And i wouldnt say 71 was the end, I would say 72. It didnt get any better after that, but now i think things are turning around some :)

Theres nothing like sitting behind the wheel of a goat hearing that thing growl. The roar of that V8...... nothing gets better!

I also love the 70 Chevelle LS6, I shutter everytime I hear that :)

Polygon, Why did you say "Well that all depends?"

Depends on what? The GTO was the First Muscle car, it created the Muscle car era. Therefore, when he said "The First and Last REAL Musclecar" He was very correct.

Preach on, other brotha Kevin. Chevelles are alright, but they are chevy's cheap wannabee "HUMBLER."

Well there never was an argument that the GTO was the first true muscle car. But I said depending all on what the last year it was produced because, as you can tell I like Mopar the last year that they really had anything with some balls was 72' because of damn gas prices. The GTO was produced up to 74'. Which engine was it that they were putting in it that year?

That is why I said that all depends.

In 74 the had 350 and 400.

Olds 442? I like these, but no, there was no comparison to the Goat.

I like all these cars they are great. I'd def give you first with Tempest with GTO badging. But I think "Royal Bobcat" is unfair considering it's really a tuner car like Saleen. Also in 69' I think I'd give a serious look to a Boss 429 Mustang

i thought they only made the BOSS 429 in 1970..i would have to think the 1969 Plymouth roadrunner 440 6 pak was also an awesome muscle car, up until 1971..then they added the "go-wing"..aaaahhh..what were they thinking.. The goat is an awesome car too..

All the the Mopar muscle cars were great up until after 1971 when the muscle car began to fall apart thanks to our government and gas prices.

Arguing from the other end, the GTO was not the first muscle car either. That title goes to the Chrysler 300 series, which started in 1955.

... then there's the original 'Banker's Hot Rod' the 100mph 1936 Buick Century, initiating the genre, featuring the bathtub man's biggest baddest new 320 CID engine (from the Roadmaster) squeezed into their smallest, lightest body (Special, was a 233 CID)

Wait a min, thats right. They put the Hemi in those. Too bad they didn't look the part.

Letter-series Chryslers (particularly the 300, B, C & F) look pretty hot to me .. care to elaborate?

Don't get me wrong. They didn't look bad, just they didn't look anything like what people generally considered muscle cars. Plus they were by no means a medium sized car, they were quite large. Besides it is just my opinion.

Everyone has a valid opinion

I guess that until the 'stripes 'n scoops' era hit in the mid '60s muscle cars could only differentiate themselves (visually) by a lowered stance, wicked exhaust or discrete badgework. Even the first Goats (or Super-Stock Dodges for that matter) were pretty plain old units, eh?

But then again, I counted 9 separate air intakes on the front of a WRX - all it needed was a periscope to complete the picture

Chrysler 300. Didn't those have a 413 in them.

You bet!

Also 440s, plus the early Hemi in 331, 354 & the superb 392 were offered through the years
Even the 426 Elephant was (at least) catalogued

Here's that awesome induction system on an original 400hp 4 speed 300F (note the 30" intake runners)

A 300F coupe would have to be on my top-ten wish list (if only!)

To find out more on the above car click here (http://www.chrysler300club.com)
then go to 'Stories'
then 'Wayne Graefen's 300F Special'

I think the most badass cars were:
Anything equipped with the 426 Hemi
The L88 Vette
LS6 and LS7 motors were also badass.

I'm just a young'un tho, so I'm more familiar with all this EFI, non carbed stuff. :)

The horsepower war's started in the 30's but I have to say that the Chrysler 300 did start it.
