Proud New 240sx Car Owner!!!!publicenemy137 09-23-2003, 05:27 PM After searching all of summer for a good deal on a 240sx, finally found one today. Got an s14 240sx w/ 92k miles for only $4gs. Runs great and paint still looks new. I have some questions though, I heard that at around 90k miles the 240sx's brakes rust up and you have to get those replaced. Also the oxygen air mass sensor may need to be replaced (same prob with my 95 maxima so maybe nissan's oxygen air mass sensor sux). Do you know any other things I should check out??? MY mechanic said I'll need to replace the chain belt, which will cost me around a grand  , but oh well I think i got a good deal on the car still. Also what octane gas do you put in the car??? I put in premium today but if it only requires 89 then i'll put in 89. Seems my car isn't getting very good gas mileage either, drove 10 miles and i saw the meter go 1/8th of the way, or it could be I'm just used to the Civic's great fuel efficiency. I'm probably just going to replace the gas filter and have the fuel injection cleaned out just in case though. Any feedback/input will be greatly appreciated. I'll definetly be on the forums now that I finally got a 240sx, and probably get a SR20 engine when i get more money. enecks 09-23-2003, 05:31 PM congrats! may i ask what year it is? publicenemy137 09-23-2003, 10:21 PM a 1995 one J SPEC SilEighty 09-23-2003, 11:29 PM After searching all of summer for a good deal on a 240sx, finally found one today. I bought mine w/ 90k miles on it and the rotors and calipers were fine but the pads needed replaced. Those were a quick install and the brakes work great. Not sure about the oxygen sensor though. I'm at 99k miles now :( and it's still working fine. You'll be able to tell when that is going bad. The car will start running kind of rough and you will be able to smell some fuel (running rich). As for the timing chain, you and a friend can do it yourselves in a weekend. It's not that hard of a job but you just need to take your time on it. The FSM gives you step by step instructions on how to change it. One of the other manuals like a chiltons or haynes normally has a pretty good description on how to get the job done as well. As for the gas to put in, I normally put in premium. It doesn't require it, but I do it anyways. I still put in 89 ocasionally and it runs perfectly fine. I've never put 87 in it but I couldn't imagine anything going terribly wrong with it in stock form. And yeah the gas mileage will be a little worse than a civic. When I had my 91 civic dx I would average about 300-325 miles around town at close to 375 highway. With the 240 I normally get around 230-250 around town and 280-300 highway. It all depends on how you drive though. I've gotten as bad as 190 to the tank around town. That's right when I got the car though and I wasn't really used to all the extra power over the civic, so I decided to have some fun with it (i.e... flooring it at every light :p)... I'm not trying to change your mind about the sr20, but just remember that there are plenty other options as well. Anyways, congrats again on getting the car :) hope you enjoy it mynismo 09-24-2003, 09:36 AM MY mechanic said I'll need to replace the chain belt, which will cost me around a grand  don't do it.... save up and get that engine swap. at least swap in a ca18det, you can pick one up for around $800. Also what octane gas do you put in the car??? I put in premium today but if it only requires 89 then i'll put in 89. Seems my car isn't getting very good gas mileage either, drove 10 miles and i saw the meter go 1/8th of the way, or it could be I'm just used to the Civic's great fuel efficiency. i think you're just used to the honda getting good gas mileage. my 240 SUCKED on gas mileage, i got about 14mpg at the very most. i put 93 in my car just because we don't have 91... look in the owner's manual, it says put at least 91. 89 will retard your ignition timing and make it slower, with possible engine damage. you can also mix half 93 and half 89... also, replace that oxygen sensor, under $30 at autozone and that might be your gas problem. stock 240s should get about 15mpg. dayna240sx 09-24-2003, 09:58 AM you guys are nuts. my car gets at least 24 MPG on 89 octane and only one oxygen sensor works. "stock 240s should get about 15mpg." Are you sure? GB Phoenix77 09-24-2003, 01:56 PM What... you guys get 14, 24, etc.... that's horrible. I get nearly 30 in the city, and as high as 38 on the highway. The car runs way better on Prem gas too by the way. stealthj 09-24-2003, 02:09 PM wow 30, 38? i get like 15, 18, maximum is like 250 a tank today i removed the resonator on my exhaust, a lil louder! now if i only knew what the intake resonator looks like.... pics anyone? RalphCare 09-24-2003, 02:11 PM stock 240s should get about 15mpg. that is the most rediculous statement i have ever heard. the car that sucks the most gas is the lamborghini SUV which looks like the hummer, and it got 11 MPG. and its a v10 or v12. so if the 240 is puttin only 15 mpg, it has to have , i dunno..... 600 horsepower or so?!. stealthj 09-24-2003, 02:14 PM 240's arent really fuel efficient (dunno if i speled that roight, ) :uhoh: but my fastback got like 250 to the tank even if i drove like a grandma my automatic convertible gets jack shit 190-200 a tank, SUCKS 240'S SUCK SELL ALL YOUR 240S SELLEM TO ME, SELL ME ALL YOUR BLACK FASTBACKS enecks 09-24-2003, 05:45 PM that is the most rediculous statement i have ever heard. the car that sucks the most gas is the lamborghini SUV which looks like the hummer, and it got 11 MPG. and its a v10 or v12. so if the 240 is puttin only 15 mpg, it has to have , i dunno..... 600 horsepower or so?!. My old land rover had a 182bhp 4.0L V-8, and I managed to get 14mpg on a good day : ). Just thought I'd throw that out there. dayna240sx 09-24-2003, 07:22 PM What... you guys get 14, 24, etc.... that's horrible. I get nearly 30 in the city, and as high as 38 on the highway. The car runs way better on Prem gas too by the way. :bs: What car is that in? A metro? Suislide 09-24-2003, 07:34 PM i heard Ford's jumbo-ute, the Expedition, only gets something like 8... i bet my M30 stock won't be too great either. 3.0 V6 pushing 3,000lbs around? yeah... but once i strip out the interior, she should be all good. publicenemy137 09-24-2003, 09:20 PM thanks for all the information guys. thanks mynismo, my mechanic said my timing chain doesn't need to be replaced until 2-3 years so by then I'll probably sell it (of course telling the buyer about the timing chain) then buy an SR20, I think the RB25's will probably be out of my range. My friend came over and looked at it, and said the thing I should do now to make it faster that's quick is replace the airbox, the high flow kind that'll add like 15 hp and it'll only cost me $50. Any other suggestions on quick and cheap hp increases?? I'll probably get a better intake+exhaust system later too, for fuel efficiency and speed. Also does anyone know where i can buy this airbox that'll give me 15+ hp??? :banghead: :1zhelp: mynismo 09-24-2003, 11:54 PM wow 30, 38? i get like 15, 18, maximum is like 250 a tank thanks for SOMEONE standing up and telling the truth. btw, i have the original sticker from the car that says it gets 17mpg all the way around..... 15/city and 19/hwy. if i would be able to find it i would scan it in. i think your full of it dayna, no way it gets 24mpg. Soyo 09-24-2003, 11:56 PM my car gets 32 in town 34 highway MWAHAHAHA but my car is gay and slow  publicenemy137 09-25-2003, 02:25 PM my civic got around 32/38 but man it was slow, i'd rather ride a damn bike that that slow PoS. I love my 240 though, great handling. I wish it had more power though, oh well later on I guess. I also have this weird swishing wind sound on the bottom of my car, gotta get that checked out. dayna240sx 09-25-2003, 04:14 PM thanks for SOMEONE standing up and telling the truth. I think your full of it Dayna, no way it gets 24mpg. Dude, just 'cause you are the king mullet on this forum... it doesn't give YOU of all people the right to challenge what I say. You do the math. 300 miles per tank, 12.5 gallons per fill-up. One other suggestion would be to research things before you throw your BS flag up in vain. http://autos.msn.com/vip/engines.aspx?modelid=2190&src=vip http://autos.msn.com/vip/engines.aspx?modelid=2151&src=vip Maybe you all are just shitty drivers :loser: SR20DETpower 09-25-2003, 04:43 PM one of the restrictions on the intake you can just get rid of is what people call the Y pipe. I don't have any pictures of it onhand but I gotta pretty good memory lol. It looks like 2 pipes that go into one, hence the y pipe name, into your airbox. This can be found inbetween the headlight and the airbox, its on the front side of the airbox, look at it and you will see what I mea. This might give u a 1-2hp increase at best if any, but people say it makes it sound a bit louder... publicenemy137 09-25-2003, 05:21 PM it all does just depend on your driving though, for how much gas you burn. If you floor it and gun it after every stop then you're just asking to have bad mileage. Maybe dayna just doesn't drive her car hard, either that or she has some kick ass air flow goin on in her car. My friend has a firebird and he guns that sh!t like no other, all he does is burn out and floor it. Seeing how it's a pontiac, the car's engine will run into a crapload of problems :nono: S14 09-25-2003, 07:21 PM My 240 was never good on gas... I wonder how the mileage will change after I put the SR20 DET from my Silvia in it...(the engine is sitting in front of my 240 right now.. just waiting on the wiring harness to be rewired). mynismo 09-25-2003, 10:03 PM Dude, just 'cause you are the king mullet on this forum... it doesn't give YOU of all people the right to challenge what I say. haha, never thought i'd hear that. btw, check out http://autos.msn.com/vip/engines.aspx?ModelId=2151&src=vip 20mpg on a stick and remember i had an auto......... 17mpg. if you dont believe me i can try to find and scan in the original sticker for my car. and remember i had a bunch of n/a mods.... there goes my gas mileage, all the way down to 14-15. SR20DETpower 09-26-2003, 09:37 AM damn don't be so harsh to the lady. I could see if she was an old bitch he was giving everyone problems, but she is pretty nice and I haven't seen her do one thing offensive, you all need to stop laying into her :icesangel stealthj 09-26-2003, 02:09 PM damn don't be so harsh to the lady. I printed out a bunch of maintenance stuff from edmunds, like check the tranny, inspect brakes, inspect suspension, etc... Anyone here has had a faulty mass air oxygen sensor??? Seems nissan has a lot of probs in with that sensor. publicenemy137 09-27-2003, 01:56 PM hey i came across this: http://www.stillen.com/sportscars_detail.asp?cat=2&subcat=187&id=2787&page=1 I know that's easy to install, does anyone know how effective it is and how much hp it will increase??? That'll probably be the first thing i'll do to my car since it's easy. publicenemy137 09-29-2003, 12:06 AM *BuMp* :banghead: Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
