My p10 died last week. I believe it's a rod bearing. I am getting a shop to rebuild it. Are there any differences in parts for rebuilds, things I may want to know, etc? I'd like to be sure I get good parts put back in, and I wanted to know if there were any better seals/gaskets available other than OEM.

Thanks,

Just get OEM. It's the best.

NO NO NO!

This is wrong. Very wrong.

A metal clad gasket comes with all sorts of problems. They shouldn't even be considered until running stupid high boost. Metal clad gaskets have troubles sealing and are very tempermental. Racers use them because A) they run stupid boost, and B) they replace them after most events.

The OEM head gasket is good for 20 psi +. It's a good gasket.

George,
Can I assume from what you said that the engine needs no extra strengthening for the addition of a turbo? Forged pistons, etc? What if anything did you change in your engine before adding the turbo?

Thanks,

Well......

a) You didn't mention a turbo build-up. If that's the case, we need to go into more detail. But, for a mild turbo set-up (under 250 bhp) I wouldn't worry about anything. I might do some things just because I was already in there, but nothing would really be needed.

b) I installed an SR20DET. That is a factory turbo engine. I did nothing internally to it. All of my mods were designed to spool the turbo more quickly and to make a bit more power.

Are you building for a turbo set-up now? Are you building for the future? Or are you just wonder what you can do as long as you're in there?

I love turbo cars, I have owned two, and own one currently. I bought the G20 to have something dependable and comfortable that gets good gas mileage. Mine so far has not been dependable, but I want to put it back together well enough so it is. I also have considered going with the DET setup in the future, but I won't be adding a turbo for a while. So, essentially I guess I am considering the turbo for the future, but if I can spend a little more while I have the engine out to make the DET conversion easier, I will consider it. I'd say it would be a mild application. I've got one FAST car already, I just think it would make the G a little more exciting to drive with a small turbo and about 6-8 psi.
