Have a 99 Tahoe 2 WD with 65K miles. Started hearing what I would call a clunking noise after brakes are applied and before excelerating from a stop. Back brakes were replaced about 1 yr ago. Mechanic thought problem was due to front rotors & pads. Replaced pads and rotated rotors. Is somewhat better but now mechanic says problem may not be brake related and could be transmission. Do not notice any problem with shifting from gear to gear. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

What you may be hearing is a driveshaft "clunk" that is caused by the slipyoke sticking to the output shaft.
The problem can be fixed with a new slipyoke from your GM dealer parts. it is a new design just for that concern.

Thanks for the info. Here's the latest....we took it to Midas to check the brakes again (they didn't do what we just had done) and they told us that the rear brakes were bad. We ended up replacing shoes, rotors & pads. They also informed us that the alternator needed replaced as it was only at 1310. They too now think it's a transmission problem. We called the dealer where we bought it from and spoke to the service manager and his response was "couldn't tell you, guess you better take it back to wherever you took it." We were more than willing to take it into the dealer but it's a 35 mile drive so we were trying to get something done without being on the highway with it. But with that attitude, I'm not sure I want to take it there now. I'm sure they will just tell us whatever we had done was done wrong. We've spent $600 so far this week and still have the same problem. This is the 1st domestic auto we've had in years and now I'm not sure I would buy domestic again. I've never had to replace brakes, alternators or had tranmission problems on any of the foreign vehicles I've owned until they were well over 100,000. So much for buying American!

Well there is the start of your problems...it may not be the vehicle, but who you have decided to have work on it.

Once again the "my mechanic says"......take it to the dealer and let him look at it. It is difficult to diagnos problems over the phone and more difficult to remedy problems that someone else has already started.
If Midas had checked your brake system, why didn't they notice that the rear brakes were worn when they did the front?
Unfortunatly you may have lost 600 due to a hack. Find a technician that you trust and will take care of you and your vehicle.

shortster did you ever find out what the cause fo this problem was. My wifes 99 Tahoe is doing the same thing now. LMK

GMmelin is right on the money. My 1999 Suburban 4x4 was doing the same. I removed the driveshaft and grease it up and the problem was gone. Dave
