Unhappy Accord Shifting Problems

I recently purchased a 92 Honda Accord LX w/ 35,000 original miles about a week ago. The car idles at 900 rpm's at a standstill. I'm experiencing a jolt when I'm shifting into the first three gears. Slowly accelerating the car will rev up to at least 3000 rpm's until it kicks into gear and then the rpm drops. It seems to have to reach at least 3000 rpm's sometimes a little more in order to up-shift. Once it reaches a certain speed the car is nice, smooth and drives beautiful. It's is the first three gears that I am worried about.

A few days after I purchased it I brought it back to seller with the problem, made him drive it and his response to me was, "Obviously you never drove a honda before because this is normal for these cars." He also told me not to be afraid to give gas but when I tried to accelerate faster it revs even higher. I previously drove a legend and an integra and never had this sort or problem, the gears always kicked in smooth. What could the problem be?

Also, when shifting the car from park to reverse and drive the whole car jolts. I had someone look under the hood of the car. He made me shift to all the gears and then press on the accelerator. He told me that the entire engine was moving up and down while doing so. He thought it was the motor mounts. I brought it back to the seller, also a so-called mechanic, and he kept the car for a day and told me he put a new motor mount in but when I got the car back it did the same exact thing. Either that's not the problem, not a problem or he just didn't fix the problem. Please help me with my problem?

The car might jolt when shifting to reverse... my '88 Accord does that occaisonally, but otherwise sounds like a worn clutch and/or bad motor mounts to me. Might fix your car jolting as well when the issue is fixed. And my Accord idles at 900rpm as well in idle -- that's normal for Honda's.

Just remember though, the engine will move front to back some when revving or shifting -- there has to be a little movement play in the engine and since it's side mount, it rocks forwards and backwards (front of car to back of car movement). If it's literally moving up and down (up toward the hood and down toward the ground) then I'd say that's definatately motor mounts.

1997 & under accords automatics do shift pretty hard. Remember it is a low powered 4 cylinder thats makes power above 3500rpm and works best @ higher rpm. Does it idle at 900rpm in park or drive/reverse? If the engine is moving a lot its a motor mount/trans mount, could be one of the others if he actually replaced one. A better way to test the mounts besides looking at the engine while engaging into gear is to actually grab the engine & try to move it in all directions. My dads 97 accord 4dr 4 banger will chirp the tires into 2nd sometimes

What color is the transmission fluid & it is full? Check level with engine off parked on a level surface.

Low mile older cars like that usually have lots of dry rotted rubber - hoses, mounts, bushings, etc. because the car wasnt driven enough. My grandpa had a 1990 Cavalier(12 yrs old at the time) with only 12,000 miles, that thing was a pile of shit I'm not saying your car is junk, but just something may want to check(rubbers).
