V-Mount Intercooler?

Today, as i was drooling over the Yashio Factory S15 silvia (even though its pink :)), i noticed the v-mount intercooler. To find info on it, i can across a online magazine article (im not gunna say the name cause i dun know if i can). It said that Yashio Factory moved the SR 5 cm back an 2 cm down, leaving JUST enough room for the v-mount intercooler. Since i am now looking for an intercooler upgrade (before i get a new turbo), and i read that v-mounted intercoolers are way more efficient (because there is less piping to get compressed) and give a higher hp output, i thought i should install 1. So i was wondering, does the SR (in my 98 us spec 240 w/ SR) have to be moved to make more room for a v-mount intercooler/radiator, and if so, how would i do it? Also, are there companies that make a full v-mount intercooler/radiator upgrade kit, or do i have to get seperate parts (intercooler and piping and radiator seperatly)? If Yashio Factory makes it (since i cannot find an english Yashio Factory site) is there a site that sells Yashio Factory products (other than the Yashio Factory site since it is only in Japanese)? Is there an [electric] fan in a v-mount intercooler/radiator? Would i have to fabricate my own air scoop behind the front bumper? Would i have to modify the roof (since the air has to go through it :)), and is there a kit to do this, or a complete carbon fiber hood with the correct opening on top for an S15 hood (since i plan to do a strawberry face at the same time)? Has anyone succesfully completed a v-mounted intercooler/radiator in an SR 240sx (S14 models)? Any info will help a lot. THANX!

i dont think they have them for 240's but some company sells a V-mount kit for FD RX-7's.

With some custom work it might be possible in a 240.

i saw one at D1GP in a s13 w/ sr20. lots of custom fab and they mutilated front engine compartment. looked ok though. good luck and let us know if you suceed!

So does anyone know if Yashio Factory sells the 1 that they put in their S15 or that was a One-Time-Only-Car-Specific thing? I cannot do the custom pipping myself since i do not have the equipment and i dunt know a place that does. So pretty much i need a kit, or the parts seperatly that would be a complete thing.

I typed up a friggin 'lot of info and it didnt work so heres the summary

1. you possibly need to cut the core support and move the engine back

2. the Signal 180 twins have a beautiful V-Mount but didnt cut the core support or move the engine

3. AC brackets (ect) probably need to be removed

4.No one sells them as kits but it doesnt look too hard to have some one custom fab the end tanks and pipes

5. Ducts are not nessicary but improve the Efficency even more.

5. Post that site if anyone gets pissed off tell em i did it.

I know an RX7 would benefit greatly from a vmount, but does a 240sx really need one? A FMIC should be good for even huge boost right?

I think that ANY boosted car would benifit since more power would be seen at lower revs because there is less pipping to compress. I also have another question...Would i have to use a smaller intyercooler to fit, or will a decent size (say Blitz LM intercooler) fit? Thanx for all the info :)

The RX-7 kit IC is good enuff for up to 600hp.

IMO it's too big..

how on earth are they supporting the intercooler and radiator? they cant just be flouting there?

it also depends on what size intercooler that you use.
If you use one that isn't too tall, but has a thicker and wider core it will fit better. Just increase the dimensions on the other two sides and let the side you are limmited to in space get smaller. This keeps your cooling area the same size but will give you more space to work with.

{wow, when i asked this I had my 98 240, brings back the memories :crying:} But, I still want to do this, now wit my 93. Anyway, is there a kit out there only for the 240 Sr20 (basically premade piping, intercooler)? I reely dont want to go get everything custom fabricated because i dont have that kind of cash.

How does it benifit the RX-7 most? I dont get it. :-p

It doesnt really benefit RX-7 the most (i dunt know anything about RX-7 so correct me if im wrong), its just a hell of a lot more efficent way of mounting an intercooler. You get a LOT more hp because you have a lot less piping to compress and a better flow. More efficent cooling = POWER. Why it benifits the RX-7 the most I dont know (mabe the layout of the rotary has somethin to do wit it?)

finding a cheap good intercooler and having a shop do some welding will be about as much or less as buying an expensive intercooler kit, it just doesn't say that Bling Bling Greddy on it hehe...

Yea i would suggest getting an intercoolr and having the rebuilt it an make it custom for your car it would be the best.

Also look into thinning out the walls of the intercooler. That is what they are doing to my intercooler. It is suppose to make it cool faster since the wall's are not as insulated.

Signal makes a kit now

I kinda want to make my own - Trust core and end tanks then do my own piping with aluminium

So, how would i go about moving the engine lower and back?............:naughty:

a brick wall may be able to help ya with that

A brick wall....hmmmm.....THAT SOUNDS LIKE A WINNER!:lol2::cwm27: But really, the more i think about it, the more I realize how much work that is. First you would have to modify or buy some freeky mounts, then have to get a custom driveshaft (between the trans that is closer to the back to the lsd), but correct me if Im wrong cause thats just what I think needs to be done. What exactly is needed to be done/bought? I actually want to do this whether or not im putting a v-mount in because it would balance the car even more than it is already (lowerin the center of gravity and making the care more weight balanced - 50 front 50 back) because to me handling is the most important aspect in a car. Just my :2cents:

240sx already has a near 50/50...spending all that money to move it back might improve it a little, but you forget you will also have to get the shifter a new hole or try to move it so that it will fit in the stock hole. Some skyline owners have even swapped in an sr20 to improve the balance of their car...so just sticking with the KA or any of the other Nissan 4 cylinders should be really balanced. Even with an RB25 it's very balanced...

About it benefiting the rx7 more...I just meant that the rx7 definitely needs the cooling benefit since the 3rd gens have twin turbos.

Its really not worth it unless its a full blow race car or you have your own machine shop

I think if you moved it back the heater hoses would need to go then new mounts new driveshaft and maybe some sawzall action on the shifter hole

it would probably be cheaper and easier to move the driver back but that would still be one of those full blown race car things.

From distributors here in the U.S., i have only seen 3 companies that make the V-mount intercooler setups for the FD's, which would be rotary extreme, HKS, and Signal auto. All of them only require minor fabrication, which is mainly relocating the battery.

One thing that i want to point out, is that since the intercooler and radiators are in a V- position, make sure when you install it, that the hot air exiting the intercooler on its way out the vented hood is not aimed directly at your intake. No sense in reducing intake temps, when the heat is getting fed back to the intake, right? When you do decide to get it, make sure you have some sort of ducting, that is feeding fresh air to your intake, or block it off with some sort of shield. Thats one thing i forgot when i installed my kit on my 7.

And as someone pointed out, the V-mounts are more beneficial to rotaries because of the massive amount of heat they generate. The standard FMIC blocks a lot of the air going to the radiator, and thats why most of the motor's fail (that and poor tuning). With a V-mount, both the rad and intercooler get an equal share, PLUS with some ducting, the intake gets unrestricted free air as well. To me, you can't beat a V-mount intercooler when it comes to any motor, rotary or not, bc every engine likes fresh, cold air, right?

Just some tips from someone who is working with a V-mount, and loves every moment of it :iceslolan
