71 Baja

I have a 71' Baja. Does anyone know if this has heat? If so, how do i get it to work? I can't quite figure it out. Also, is it possible to hook up an aftermarket radio/cd player? Does anyone know if someone makes something to cover the distributor so that it doesn't get water in it?And one last thing, will this exhaust fit?http://www.chirco.com/cgi-bin/chirco...View/CPR251153

a baja is just a lifted, cut up beetle, so it had heat at one time, if you could call it that, I am 20 minutes form school and just about the time i used to pull into the lot I couls startr to feel the warm air at my feet.

There should be two levers, one on either side of the e-brake handle. These are the controls for the heat. One says heat/defrost and the other says temp. The temp. controls how much heat comes out and the heat/defrost controls where it comes out. On defrost, it should only come out up front by the windshield and by the front feet area. The flaps down on the floor in front also have flaps to open/close. On heat, it should come out in the rear by the passengers feet. Two holes. Now, if you don't have the heat exchangers on the exhaust, than these wont work. The exchangers are located under the valve covers (part of the exhaust) but some aftermarket exhausts don't have these. Also, on the fan shroud, there should be two hoses that connect to these exchangers through the engine tin. These allow the air from the fan to blow through the exchangers (heat sinks) warm up from exhaust temp and warm your feet. There are also hoses from the exchangers to the body of the car under the back seat area. Hope that helps.

Actually SilverCloud you answered a question I was wondering about. I just bought a baja, my first VW and don't expect it to have heat since everything has been removed but always wondered what those levers were for. Thanks for the info.

No problem. I've been working on VWs for a few years, so I know some stuff.
