I have a 1998 GT with about 110 on it. Saturday i noticed what started off as a squeak, and shortly later (2 or 3 miles) was something that almost made me think my wheel was broke. it sounded like thick rubber being flexed and stretched. my first though was wheel bearing, not CV because it didn't do it any worse or less when you turned. the bottom line is somehow, i cracked my stabilizer, bent my axle, and ground up my wheel bearing (probably from the bent axle). now i have it completely apart except for the last 2 steps. popping the ball joint and actually pulling the axle. this is where i have hit a snag. the ball joint stud turns with the nut. I was told to pound the seperator in there to try to reseat the stud, but it doesn't change anything. has anybody had this problem before, or do you have any suggestions. this is my only vehicle up on jackstands in my garage, i need help ASAP.

Put a floor jack under the ball joint to push the stud into the control arm. Then try removing the nut. Or you need to chisel the nut off.

Last thing to do is remove the whole control arm with the ball joint connected.

ok i'm not sure if we're on the same page here. the ASE certified Master Mechanic tells me you actually do know wtf you're talking about, but possibly the particulars of the issue are being miscommunicated. I don't see how putting a jack under the ball joint and jacking it up will help me turn the nut free of the stud. however, the chiseling the nut off did catch my eye (though i don't have any chisels, and that would take a while without an air chisel). but what really caught my eye was the removing the whole control arm. we're talking about the lower control arm i'm thinking of? that lower part that bolts to the frame??

also, i'm not sure about this or not. i bought a hayes manual, and it's saying i need a slide hammer and an adapter to remove the shaft from the transaxle housing. is this truely a necessity, or can i do this another way.

just wanted to close this thread. i took your advice and looked at the lower control arm. it has a regular 2 way hinge for the back mount, and a semi-global hinge on the front. i popped the back hinge and was able to swing the entire assembly out enough to push the shaft through. some working over the stabilizer link, and it's ready to come out. thanx for the help =].
