1991 Diesel Jetta 2dr questions...

Just purchased a 1991 2dr Diesel Jetta and have a few questions...

1) The exhaust needs replaced...I would prefer to bite the bullet and go all out from engine back...suggestions?

2) On the dash on the drivers side, there is a lever/pull that I cannot seem to find out what it does through various searches on the net...the owners manual was not a part of the vehicle unfortunately, but the paperwork for EVERY LOF from new was included...

3) clutch is suspect as dumping in 5th (old school indicator) it continues to chug instead of dying...any recommendations other than stock for a better than original part? :) I would like to stay close to the ground, but dont mind spending funds if the 'upgrade' has enhancements not offered by stock.

engine only has ~109k on it, and with the exception of the 'diesel' effect from running, and the needing a new exhaust it drives pretty nice...for a 12.5 YO vehicle...what other mods to increase power are avail?

Is there an easy swap for the new(er) TDI engines so in the future I can consider this as an option...Body is straight and true with only a few spots of surcase rust...passed the rust test (magnetic penlike thingymabob) on all the usual places these appear to rust.

Thanks in advance,

Scott

oh right that pull thingy on the drivers side by the steering wheel is the diesel cold start. When its really cold, the engine is cold, a light comes on in the dash, it think its yellow, pull that thing and let it sit there, with the engine turned off until that light goes off, then starrt the car, this lever activates the glow plugs to heat the chamber, its in my owners manual, i read it
