First of all I just wanna say that this is my first VW ever, my cousin actaully gave the car to us. It's a '94 Golf 2.0l. It's got 130k miles on it too. But it's a great car. It drives great and has good handling and I love the way it hugs the road on curves.

I don't know what he has done to it, but it looks like it's all stock. I don't know what he has replace over the years etc. or when he had the last tuned up.

Anyways, my problem is that the car seems to get insanely heated just from driving it even when it's less than 30 minutes. Even when I take it out late at night and just drive around to see how it feels, it gets way hot in no time.

We're taking it to the shop later on, but I want to see what you guys think could be the problem.

Thermostat doesn't work properly. Try to measure the temperature of the thermostat. Check your radiator for leaks or damages. The coolant might not flow as it should.

Hello, i have a golf II 1989, 1.6 L turbo diesel. since the last 3 months the temperature gauge goes up to 75%. I already changed the temperature termostat, if i wire the termoestat contacts the fan goes on and works in the 2 speeds, but i think that when i am running it doesnt work. It seems impossible... i´ve never had problems with the car. the fuses are ok... help me please. what do you suggest me to do now ??? I also changed the radiator coolant to the best coolant i´ve found but didnt worked. Please send me suggestions to ricardo.oliveira@sm.efacec.pt

try the fan sensor~could be located in radiator/or on the thermostat housing. cross out the wires,if fan works it,s the sensor,if not then wiring.

I already found the mistake in my vw. A few weeks ago i replaced a tube from the radiator circuit. In that operation i replaced and cleaned the radiator... and i made i mistake, i didnt "bleed" the radiator well, so it gained air... and air prevents the coolant to get into touch with the termostat, so the 1st fan velocity didnt worked... i looked in the net and come with a solution, i already did it and now its working well.

1 - warm the car to the middle temperature without the cap that covers the coolant resovoir.
2 - And now the trick... turn on the heat on the car to maximum... the coolant will run through the tubes to warm the air to warm the veihucle interior, and you will see bubles in the resovoir... after a few minutes until it stops give some gas to the car... just a little to bring the air up. turn off the car.
3 - with a key, unscrew the termostat until it comes a little water, as soon you see water, screw it again. cover with the cap the resovoir and try it out.

I just hope i dont have a leek in somewhere else, because if i have the air will enter again and bring back the problem. tomorrow i will try it again to see if it is ok.
