Actually, I don't recall ever seeing a 2.8 (factory) Sunbird. The Sunbirds and other J-cars used an OHC engine as their base engine whereas the Cav got an OHV. Some were turbocharged up through 1990, and in 1991 the Sunbirds finally started getting the 3.1L V6. The Sunbird kept the 2.0 OHC as its base engine until the 3rd generation redesign in 1995, after which it got the 2.2 OHV. Since then, they've been the same. If you've run against a Sunbird with a Cav and won, either they weren't optioned the same (difference in power, transmission, or weight?), it could be a factory freak versus a factory dog, or the other guy just can't drive.
