resetting check engine light

A mechanic said that after you have fixed the problem that caused the light to come on. You may be able to reset the light by disconnecting the negative terminal in the battery and leaving it off for like 5 minutes or so. I have not tried this so I would be interested to know if it works. I have had 3 VW's and all three have had a the check engine light come on at some time.
