91 Dodge Dynasty: Fuel/Acceleration issue

I'm curretly driving a 1991 Dodge Dynasty (V6, automatic) that is having an intermitant problem with the acceleration while driving. The car has no issues starting, idles like a dream, and easily blows away newer 4-bangers.

But every once in a while, I step lightly on the gas and nothing happens. I press harder and get no response, the car just idles like I had my foot off the gas. Sometimes I get a little backfiring. Once I floor the accelerator, I'm pressed back into my seat. My throtle has two speeds - idle and full blast.

Now, while coasting down the highway I can put it into neutral and I will have the full range of the throtle available to me. But once I put it back into Drive, nothing.

I have brought this car to several mechanics, none have been able to fix it. I have had all the wires and plugs changed twice, I had the fuel line blown out and the filter changed. The problem will come and go as it pleases.

A friend of mine has seen this same thing happen with his mother's Dodge Dynasty (unknown year). Could this be a fluke with the model itself? Any insight provided would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I would say that it is not a problem with the engine. You have a problem with the transmission. It might be time for a rebuild or better yet a new unit. I think your car has the A-604. I saw a new one for sale on eBay recently.

How could the transmission cause this problem? My transmission seems to be in good working order. The problem is the engine ideling when i hit the gas.

That is what leads me to believe that it is a problem with the tranny.

check the throttle position sensor and the map sensor. one of them is more than likely your problem. but could possibly be trans. but doubt it.

i agree with slick steve. i doubt the transmission problem. check the throttle position sensor, and check the actual throttle body and it's connection with the throttle cable.
