Hello everyone,

I just purchased a 2000 Jimmy SLT. I picked it up today and within the first 5kms, the service engine light came on and stayed on. I drove it back and the sales rep told me that they had just changed the oil but forgot to reset a code for this in the computer. Does what he told me hold water?

Also, I'm mechanically inclined and understand the logic behind the computer and it's trouble codes. I took automotive in High School and we learned trouble codes on a 92 Buick. I read somewhere on the internet that the codes and the computers have changed significantly on the 1996 and newer vehicles.

Is one still able to use a paperclip and get the codes out of the computer by reading the flashing light on the instrument panel? Has this changed at all?

Form 1996 and up you need an OBDII scanner to retrieve or clear codes. The pin method does not, as far as I know, work on the newer vehicles.
What was on? Service engine soon light or change oil light. Service engine soon lite needs a scanner to clear where as change oil light can be reset by anyone. Check owners manual.

Thanks for the reply. It's the light that looks like an engine block, I guess the "service engine soon" light. I'm not sure if there's an oil specific light or not, as I only logged a total of 10 mins in the truck before taking it back. I just thought it strange that the dealer told me there was a code that needed to be reset when the oil is changed... Something about the light coming on every 5000kms to remind you to change the oil, and how this hadn't been done on the last change or something...

If the SES light (the yellow light shaped like an engine block) comes on, that means you have a PCM related problem.
It is no way related to changing the oil!

Take it back and have them scan for trouble codes and repair the problem.

Hehehe...

That's what I thought. I felt like he was taking me for a ride so I left it and told them to call me when it was fixed. There was a small alignment adjustment that needed to be done also. For sure, when I pick it up again, I'll inquire as to which code was stored on the computer for future reference.
