i need help with 86 chevy nova.......

i have a 1986 chevy nova, my problem is it will not run in drive or reverse. It starts and runs in park and when I give it gas the rpms increase, so i dont believe its a fuel problem, but when I put it in drive or reverse it dies instantly. I was told by two mechanics that it could be the coil, I replaced it and nothing...
Any help and I would be greatfull.

Not sure about a Nova, but I have seen on other cars that there may be Vacume lines that run to the trans and the carb, or a linkage that attaches from the carb to the tranny. Find a service manual, or a haynes manual or something that shows them and check to make sure they are there and in the right place. I may be totally off-base here as I have little to no knowledge with Nova's.

Good Luck
