283 is a SB Chevy. 289 is SB Ford. 283 would be acceptable.
What was originally in your pickup? How are you going to drive/use it?

Turn about is fair play, I guess.
People have been putting Chevies in Ford Chassis since forever.

I think you should go with a 350 chevy...almost unlimited potential & parts are a dime a dozen.

Actually, IRL Chevy teams run rebaged Oldsmobile engines...which is somewhat less heritical than Mercedes-Benz running the rebaged Chevy-Ilmor engines a few years back...

283
The 283 is a chevy. Did your uncle studder?
I would have to agree with the 383 stroker. a great engine with lots of potential that can fit most budjets.
What ever you do don't let ford parts touch your GM.

Well you have to let us know what you want to do and about how much to spend.
That has alot of bearing on how to keep your ride alive.
502 would be great if i had an extra 7000 grand (create motor price)
383 would be awesome for weekend racer/cruiser. as a daily just runs to hard works waaaay more than really designed.
My fave choice is a BB 427 you can with no probs get 600 hp and still keep it as a daily but your bill be through the roof.
300-to 350 hp sb 350 would be great as a daily and cruiser. just enough ass to smoke most of the Ricers and stock sport cars ( Notice I said most and there's always exceptions)
you get depedability and cheap part.
Btw fellas I'm new here and this would be my 2nd post.
