Mk III factory head unit wiring pinouts

hi all,
a friend has enlisted my help in replacing the factory head unit in his mk3 cabrio with an aftermkt item... does anyone have the wiring pinout diagram for the factory head unit? also, is the head unit slotted in from the front with a sleeve or are they mounted to side brackets that require some parts of the dash fascia to be removed? if it's the latter, it'll be great if someone can tell me all clips and screws so i don't break anything...
on another note, is it hard to access dash lights in a mk3? the orig color is a dim green and it gives the car an old look so he's thinking of changing to brighter bluish white lights like in the newer models...
cheers,
louis

Here is a wiring diagram, should help you out.
Does the head unit have two small holes on each side, on the front that is.

As for the dash lights, you are talking about the gaug cluster right?
Why not pick up one of the new clusters, less than $100.

If you want to DIY, look here.

Deakins,
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
as for the $100 gauges, are u refering to those indiglos covers? what causes makes the lights green? do they have a green sleeve over the bulbs or do the gauges faces have a green tint where the light passes thru?
cheers,
louis

The whole gauge cluster from a mk4 Cabrio.
I don't know the price from the dealer, but you should be able to get them cheap used or off the new.

ahhh... how silly of me! i should've read that diy page you posted earlier... with the head unit installation, is yours slotted into a sleeve thru the front or mounted on brackets at the side? do any parts of the dash need to be removed? my friend's car, being a cabrio, only has front speakers installed... do u think it's possible to install rear speakers without cutting any structural metal? i have another friend who had a ford escort cabrio who had to cut metal to do that but i don't like the idea...
cheers,
louis
