Paint Equipment

First of all this is my first post so I hope Im puting it in the right section. But to get down to business I just got a red 96 probe and the paints a mess. A friend of mine just got a car that needs some work too. I've found alot of info on do-it-yourself paint jobs but none of them have talked about the best kind of equipment to use. I need to know what kind of sprayer (dont even know what they are really called) would be best for someone on a budget. Since id probably split the price with my friend I could go up to about $200. If there is any other must have equipment any info on that would also be greatly apreciated.

You will want to use a gravity feed spray gun like this instead of a siphon feed gun(bottom feed)

A large(30gal+) capacity air compressor will work better than a small 15 or 20 gal

Paint
Primer
Sand paper
sanders
body filler
dust masks
masking tape

I ordered another makita 9227 high speed buffer, came with carrying bag, 2 pads, & velcro backing pad for only $183.00 w/ free shipping. That is cheaper than Cornwell Tools cost on the buffer only

I paid $250.00 for my last Makita (buffer only) from Cornwell & thought that was a good deal

I saw a couple gravity fed spray guns on ebay for cheap. Are they even worth it?

We use Sata spray guns at work, but i think they might be a little out of yor price range they range from i think around 200-600 dollarsI'm thinking about getting a New Sata spray gun for use at work, its 429 USD, and has a digital regulator built into the gun,i heard it sprays very nice also! Otherwise, Devillbess makes spray gun for a decent price otherwise there are crappy genarics like chicago pneumatic and others like that. But what does your friend have for equpitment already? It takes alot of skill to paint a car, and make it halfway decent. If he can do it for under 200dollars it would be a mirical, and look like shit, no offense to your friend, if you go to a bodyshop, it will cost you moocho buck for new paint, if you keep the same color, the most likely wont spary the door jambs and stuff like that cuz it isnt needed, but would prolly run you around 400 dollars in paint and alot more for other materials and of course labor whitch is the big killer. If you have anyoth questions please feel fre, i'm sure i can answere them since i do work at a body shop.

My thought process was that i could go to maaco and get cheap a** paint job that will look bad and last about a year for around $300-400, or I could spend the same amount of money and do the same quality paint job myself. Then after i totally screw up my car I can always do it over agian untill i get it right.

To THEPRobed, Yes you are better off going to MAACO for a 299.00 paint job. If you don't do a color change to the car you're in good shape, remember that prep is the key to a good paint job, if there are no dents or dings there won't be extra charges for prep. To paint a vehicle on your own is a massive undertaking in just materials to prep an auto skin. Stick to the repaint. Goiod luck!
