Personality quirks

I have recently aquired a 1987 944 (non-turbo) with ~140k miles and have discovered that it has a couple of "personality quirks". I would appreciate any insight that community members have on these things. Thanks.

1) The cruise control sometimes (not always) behaves badly. When I press the control lever forward to the "Set/Accel" position and immediately release it, the car accelerates. I continues to do this until I must tap the brakes to prevent myself from running over the car in front of me.

2) The windshield washer does not work. The reservoir is full and the pump seems to run, but no fluid comes out of the sprayers.

3) There is a lot of play in the shift lever. Sometimes this gets to the point that it is hard to find the appropriate gear.

Im not a porche expert and im not sure of the systems in the car, but i do have a few suggestions of where to start.

Winsheild Washers:
-when you turn on the pump, you should hear a whining noise, if this is not present then you have an electrical problem or the pump is not functioning. If it does work, check to see if the line is clogged or if the sprayer nozzles are clogged up, replace the lines\nozzles if necessary

Shifter Lever:
-Exessive play is caused by something being loose in the shift linkage. Pull the boot off and take a look at the mechanism. Some shifter are held in place by return springs, if one gets loose, the shifter will be real floppy. If this is not the case, get under the car and look at the bushings that hold the linkage in place, are they secure, torn, ect? check it all the way back to the trans.

Good luck with your probs!
