Transmission Leak

We have a 1988-89 (cant really remember) Ford Ranger with a Automatic Transmission (i think 5 speed.) We where driving it and my wife went to make a 3 point turn and when she put it in reverse the truck died. Once she got it restarted and we drove off I noticed a big pool of red fluid on the ground.

Any ways as we where driving with the truck in overdrive she kept giving it gas and said that she couldn't get it to go faster then 55mph So she down shifted to drive, to make it short she just kept downshifting till we stoped.

She turned off the truck then back on but when put in drive the engine will just rev. The underpart of the truck is covered with tranny fluid.

My question is what part of the tranny could have broke to cause such a loss of fuel so quick?

thanks for the help.

Hi,

It could be a number of things. It could be a line or a seal. However, it is also possible for it to be the torque converter, which would most likely require the replacement of the transmission. Make sure you check anything that could be a cheap fix, such as the lines and seals. Make sure they are good and tight. Hope this helps
