Question Interchangeable GM keyless remotes?

This is a cross-post from the Olds forum since I have an Olds 98, but this issue would apply to Chevy and other owners as well.

I need to buy a new keyless entry remote for my car, but it's been hard to find the exact right part number on ebay. (My part number is 12522338, for a 1990 Olds 98.) How can I find out whether I can use a Chevy, Pontiac, or other similar 3-button remotes will work on my car. Another thing I wonder about is why some remotes have the trunk button on the bottom and others have it on the top-right.

No other remotes will work, but the old number 12522338 has superceded to Part number 88959920. Try searching for that number.

Good luck

John

Dang, I was hoping I could settle for one of the remotes I've seen that are just one digit off, like 12522337. I figured the difference might just be the logo on the plastic case, which is no big deal.

Just to be sure I've got this right, as long as I have the right part number then I can program a different FCC ID number to work on the car, right? I still have the original owner's manual with the programming instructions.

Yes, the part number is the main thing to have match.
I never pay much attention to the FCC numbers.

Thanks for the help. I appreciate the heads up on the updated part number; that might make things easier.
