Okay, first the books are not based on the series. The books came first and have the proper order of events.

Second, yes there is a movie. That's third stage. It deals with Takumi realizing his desire to race professionally, exacting revenge on Team Emperor, and driving against the son of Bunta's greatest rival.

Third. The company that translated the books, Tokyopop, licensed the series and will be distributing it stateside beginning this fall. A boxset hasn't been confirmed, but there will be MULTIPLE English language/audio versions plus the original Japanese that will allow fans to choose how original they want the series to be when they watch it. (IE, with or without the changed names and new soundtrack)

Octagon are you sure there's a new soundtrack?

Cuz they never did it to GTO altho they did have a Initial D music video on one of the DVD's from GTO (it was poo).

Original soundtrack is the way to go

Actually there are, or at least were plans for a live action Initial D movie. Last I heard of it was probably a year or so ago and Jackie Chan was supposed to be either directing or producing. Unfortunately I haven't heard anything for awhile so I think it might be in movie limbo.

I am very sure about it, NSX. Here's the official Tokyopop press release regarding Initial D. Anime News Network has been covering the series's progress very well since the controversy over the changed names.

There is also the "Extra stage" movie. It's about the Sileighty girls take on some racers from the Emperor team.It has nothing to do with Takumi.

I got all the episodes(stage 1 and 2)and the movies for free!!!All you need is high speed internet and Kazaa!

The changed names and new soundtrack will not be in the subtitles, and will be the default setting for the dub. However, Tokyopop is doing two dubs for the series to respond to the outcry of fans. You'll be able to select the dub and choose options that individually restore the names and soundtrack.

Tokyopop is pretty new to anime, though they've been doing manga for about forever. They're really trying to get the series on the air, and that's what all the delays have been about.
