General tire fit question for a truck

Alright,

I have a stock 2000 Chevrolet S10LS 4x4, and pretty soon I'm going to be looking for "off road" tires, or all terrain I guess you could say. Before going to a tire place to inquire and buy I'd like a little insight before I go;

Without any type of suspension or body lift to accomodate larger tires, what is the biggest tire size I can fit without having to do any modifications?

After doing a little reasearch, including here, I figured a 30''X9.5'' would fit with a little room left over. I dont want the tires to rub, have problems later, and such trying to squeeze in an extra inch, you know?

BF Goodrich All Terrain A/Ts are the tires I was consdering in buying. Someone I work with has an S10, exactly the same as mine but a year older and he didnt do any type of modifications to get his A/Ts to fit. I'm going ask him tomorrow about his tire info, and what not.

Thanks for the help.

Based on what we've test fit on your truck, 30x9.5-15 would be the way to go as long as your rim is at least 6.5" wide. Many S-10's only have 15x6 so you should check for the size molded into the wheel on the front of the rim by the bead of the tire, around the center cap area or on one of the back spokes.
