91 Caprice 305 siezed?

I am relitively new to auto repair (I've been puttering since I was a kid, my father, who recently passed away, was a machanic w/30 years and made me help). Being a developer by trade I've had little time to do this so please be patient. My problem is my 91 caprice classic 305 189k former small town cop car (not a 350, but strangely modified none the less) was going fine then died. Upon investigation I found the fuel pump starter and the time chain were out. I replaced the starter and pump but when I was lining up the marks the flywheel wouldn't turn! Some machanics thought it froze up, others say it's repairable. If it's repairable, what to do? It could be spun barrings, a bent rod, ect. If not, a 305 or 350? Personaly I believe if I put a 305 with a performace cam on it'll be a lot cheaper then a 350 (this is a family car not a mod job, I want to save $). Yet could it be something simple I'm over looking? Any help?
Thanks.

Seems to me it would be easier to get a good used engine from the salvage yard and just swap them out.

To find out if it's repairable you would have to tear down the engine, and basicly rebuild it.

I had the same thing here , I put some wd40 in each cylinder every day for a week then I could turn it over with a 1/2 in socket and a power bar , changed oil and filter abd turned it over with starter and poured a bit of gas in carb and it went , smoked a bit for a while and worked fine ..
I have it in a 84 wagon now .. 350 It was a bit tight when I got it and it got tighter after it sat here for a couple months befor i got at it.great now and smokes (Like in Speed not exhaust)compared to the old 305.. Bruce
I changed the motor rather than spend alot on the 305 . Got the 350 for 200 dollars and it works fine out of a 77 caprice .Stuck headers on i and that was it.. Made a big difference..

You stated it'd be cheaper to run a nice cam in the 305 that to swap the out with a 350. True, but if you do end up replacing the engine with even just a used junk yard one, a 305 and 350 are the same price as are parts for them.
