265ci "Baby" LT1--worth the effort?

I'm hunting for a b-body for my next daily driver, hopefully a 90s one, and 9c1s aren't AS easy to find up here... I've found one 265ci 9C1 for fairly cheap. I have absolutely no experience with this motor.

1) is it reliable? Or as reliable as the regular LT1, I should say? No crank issues, crappy rods, anything like that?

2) could I manage to make an extra 50-60 hp over the 200 it makes, to bring it up to par with the factory LT1? I'm sure it takes MOSTLY the same parts as the LT1. Full exhaust obviously, a cold air kit, but what about a cam? And if so what kinda cam will flow with these heads? I'm sure they can't flow as well as regular LT1 heads. Any info is greatly appreciate guys, I'd just love to rip off a 14.99 with this thing if I buy it :b

john, in terms of reliablity, it will last as long as a well maintained lt1, which is between 250,000 and 300,000 miles. as far as upgrade for power, a few have done some mods to get up to 300hp, but thats about it. it will spin a high rpm too. if you are not to far from new york, check www.keymotorsusa.com. they have a large selection of 9c1's for good prices.

The 4.3 is an extemely reliable engine as well as easy on the pocket book for fuel economy. They are made from the LT1 casting without the front Left and Right Cylinders.

Mods are hard to find smog legal wise, but plentiful for these engines.

Good luck with it.

Sorry shortbus but your wrong on this matter. The Chevy caprice 4.3L is a V8 they didn't chop any cylinders off. this engine was only in production for about 3 years. It's called an L99 the main difference with this engine and the LT1 is that the pistons are smaller. same crank same stroke. runs 10.99:1 compression so can get some decent power out of them 350-400 if you get splayed main caps machined into the block. Parts regularly avaible through jegs considering that 80 percent of the engine is LT1. Hell if you didn't know better than to read engine vins somebody could easly say it's an LT1.
