coolant sensor location

I have a 93' grand cherokee laredo. Need to find the location of the coolant sensor. Also, if this is showing on service message as malfuncioning, can this cause engine to shut-down while driving? Thanks.

Re: coolant sensor location

Help! I have a 1994 grand cherokee with starting problems.I get a coolant sensor bad message and the engine won't start the next time i try it, unless it cools off. I purchased a new one and was told it's located by the thermostat housing in the engine block, the sensor there is only a one wire device whereas the computer connected sensor is two wire but I can't find its location. Can anybody help me?

What engine do you have, the 5.2L (93 and 94) has 2 coolant sensors one on either side of the t-stat housing, the one on the driverside of the housing is kinda hard to see the engine wiring harness is running right beside it.

I have never seen nor heard of the ECT Sensor shutting the engine down.

Here is some helpful info for anyone who has the 'BAD COOLANT SENSOR' message on their VIC, This message reffers to the Coolant Level Sensor (in the overflow bottle. It could be a bad Sensor or even bad wiring.

I thought I fixed my COOLANT SENSOR BAD message a few months ago, I read a post where a guy used a 3.2k resistor, unplgged the sensor, and connected each end of the resistor to the plug, this fooled the computer into thinking the sensor was good and would not display the error message. (a bad Sensor would show a reading higher or lower then 3.3k or 3.2k and if the coolant level was low it would just show a resistance value of 0k), So I got a resistor and soldered it into the wiring plug and that lasted about a day or 2 and the message came back, so I started checking the resistance of the sensor and it was good (new - the first thing I did was replace the sensor when this message popped up), so I melted the solder and pulled the resistor out and left the lil bit of solder in the plug and plugged it back in and voila the message was gone - FOR ABOUT 2 WEEKS, then it came back.

So I started searching online for the COOLANT SENSOR BAD message and found another site where someone found another problem, apparently where the plug in the back of the VIC is solder to the board - those solder points tend to break. So I tore my VIC apart one day at work and checked the solder point, I seen one bad solder but it wasn't a pin for the Coolant Level Sensor, this person also mentioned that it was hard to see the hair line crack around the solder point, well I knew which pin was for the Sensor (a corner wire) so I resoldered the bad pin along with the other three corner pins and I can happily say it's been about 2 months now with NO - 'COOLANT SENSOR BAD' message.

hope this helps!
