Lightbulb Automatic Transmission Easy Fix

Automatic Transmission __Common Problem__Easy Fix

Check Your Governor__

Problem at 130,000 miles, 1991 Loyale 2WD (M41 3 Speed) Automatic which has always performed well, quit shifting above 1st speed.

When Manually shifted to 2nd speed it would shift perfectly from 1st to 2nd speed and would provide decelleration brake-ing ( indicating the Forward clutch and oneway Roller Clutch "Good", 1st gear, and the Forward clutch and Intermediate Band "Good", 2nd gear ) leaving the Direct Clutch as suspect and indicating that the need for Costly and Labor Intensive Transmission Overhaul is likely.

Then my neighbor came over, He said Front Wheel Drive Subarus use 90W Gear lube to lubricate the Ring Gear and also the Automatic Transmission's Governor. He suggested that the 90W Gear lube had Leaked out the axil seals and had been allowed to run low, allowing the high Speed Governor Gear to overheat from lack of lubrication and to burn away. He said Check the 90W Gear Lube Level (that itty bitty Dipstick, Passengerside, below the spare tire), sure enough it was low, and the Governor Gear was Cored !

15 minutes, 3 Bolts Passengerside, tap & the cover comes off, pull out the Governor assembly ___cored ")(" gear Bad, straight "l l" gear Good___ repair or replace with Governor from salvage yard, and No Costly Expense, just a common problem.

You didn't even get dirty, and your on the road again :-) :flash:
.
Gov Check applies to all Automatics chevy, ford, imports ect.
Hope this helps somebody. Luv my Subaru
