Brakes/2000 328i

I currently have a 2000 328i with 48,000 miles AND am still on the original brakes. A lot of freeway driving, judicious use of the brakes, and a manual transmission help. I understand that BMW recommends replacing the rotors with the brakes and that 'turning' the rotors for resurfacing is not normally done with their later models. The car still stops just fine, and yes, there is just as much brake dust occuring now as when the car was new. There is some vibration coming through the brake pedal and I suspect that the rotors are probably a little warped.

Yet, the brake pad indicator light is still out. It does come on during the diagnostic cycle when the ignition is turned on.

Question: Should I wait for the idiot light to replace the brakes/rotors, or have them serviced now? Also, I hear that $200 for the brake job is about normal. For those of you that have had the brakes done, is this normal?

Re: Brakes/2000 328i

i have a 99e46 328 sport 5spd, just did my brakes, the light came on and I waited a month 1500miles before replacing, there were no problems. $200 for labor yes, about $350 in parts, I actually got the wrong front rotors, so we had the old ones turned, and I drive it pretty hard and I haven't had any problems at all. Wait for the light to go off before spending your money, I always assumed minewere bad because htey were noisey, (grinding sound just a little bit) especially backing up and goiing slow, but when I took them off there was still quite a bit of pad left. If it is not broke don't fix it,
