Re: head bolt question

Haven't had the same experience, but there many kits out there to fix head bolts that have stripped and pulled out. You could drill it out and tap it for the next larger size bolt.

Re: head bolt question

Are you sure the head bolt pulled out of the threads (i.e. stripped the threads from the block)? Or did the bolt snap in two? This happened to a 2nd generation Escort 1.9L in our family. The bolt snapped where its diameter necks down, at the point the threaded portion of the bolt begins. It was also a corner bolt. The car ran like that for over a year, slowly leaking coolant - until the head gasket finally blew out at that corner. We couldnt see the slow leak because the area was covered by the exhaust manifold.
If it actually stripped the threads out of the cast iron block, I would recommend installing a thread insert (such as helicoil or other brands of similar products). That way you are staying with the original head bolt size, and original head bolt torquing scheme & 'tension'.

Re: head bolt question

the threads in the block stripped out. i helicoiled the block then torqued the bolts down. it still leaked water into the cylnders craked head again. so i got some blue devel from where i work and poured it in and so far the leak is fixed.

Re: head bolt question

Thanks for the feedback. Thats the first time Ive heard of stripping threads from an Escort block. I like to be aware of possible failure types so I can be "aware and take care". 'Cause I hope to keep my Escorts for many more years.

Re: head bolt question

your welcome. it's the first time i have seen it happen as well. i know that the head has been replaced before i bought the car and i had to replace it again last year after it cracked in two places. so the threads were probably damaged and finally gave out.
