98 Eclipse - High idle when car is moving

I have a 98 Eclipse GS. While the car is not moving the idle is normal. When the car idles while in motion (not in gear but moving) the idle is 1750-2000 rpm.

Thinking TPS but am not too sure due to other issues that are now happening:
  • Doesnt want to start when hot
  • Starts rough when it does start
  • Overheating when idle (gurgling following shutdown)
Recently replaced:
  • Timing Belt
  • O2 sensors
  • Plugs and Wires
  • Valve cover gasket
  • 2 other belts (altenator and steering pump/ac belt)

Was this happening before you replaced all of those things, or did it just start afterwards? How does it idle when it does idle normal, smoothly or a little rough? Who did the T-belt on the car, you or a shop?

Re: 98 Eclipse - High idle when car is moving

Mine does the same. Idles fine, runs fine. Pop it out of gear while moving, and the rpms usually stay up around 2 grand before they fall back down, and it falls to idle when you just about stop, right? I believe I have a vacuum leak somewhere which is causing my issues. But the other problems you're having sounds like there's something bigger going on there.

Re: 98 Eclipse - High idle when car is moving

My car just passed 100,000 miles and it started acting up so i wanted to give it a good tune up with belts, plus, wires, o2 sensors. The idle issue happened before replacing the belts but it seems like everything is going bad all at once.

I did the belts myself, tripple checked the allignment marks. Again the idle issue was occuring before hand.

The car idles while running but as the car slows down at a stop sign it drops to 1000 rpm as I stop.

The idle sitting still is 1000 rpm and is mostly smooth. When I first start my car up it runs rough for a minute then smooths out. If I press the gas pedal while it is running rough the engine dies out.

Thanks for the responses so far, at least someone else is having this issue!

I would say check the came angle sensor and the crank position sensor. Those 2 are big culprits in multiple problems.

Re: 98 Eclipse - High idle when car is moving

Mine use to idle at 1200 when rolling and would drop to 900 once stopped. Test the IAC while your at it. That wouldn't explain it being hard to start when warm. It always could be the ECU. It not that cheap of a part so I wouldn't replace it yet but dont forget about it either. It would be nice if you know someone that has an eclipse and you could test their ECU out.

Re: 98 Eclipse - High idle when car is moving

yeah, I was thinking about just replacing every sensor one by one, I was hoping it would be an easy fix but no one I have talked to locally knew anything about it.

Hope it is not ECU, or crank sensor for that matter. Might start with the easy to access sensors. Sounds like this may get expensive.
