Re: 1/12 Tamiya Porsche 935 with SMS detail set
Thanks for all the encouragement, I really appreciate it...
I do need some help please? The antenna on the roof which I presume is for radio communication between the pits and the driver, must somehow connect to the drivers ear (microphone)? Does anyone have a picture of what this set-up looks like? Thanks

I assume you have the picture CD of SMS? The car that is shown there does not have an antenna. Also the pictures of a restauration job at Freisinger donīt show an antenna. Maybe you can leave him out |

Thanks also to everyone else for the comments! OK, more updates... I've almost completed the chassis last weekend. I just need to add some final wiring and plumbing. Next was the body. Considering the history of this car, I wanted the model to look the same as the actual car so I really thinned out the 2K clear, that way I don't have a finish that looks too deep. I'll also mask off some of the sponsors 'stickers' and spray a light semi-gloss clear over them. To finish the paint I sanded the clear with 3200, 3600 & 4000 grit sanding cloths to 'dull' the surface. I then polished the paint with Finishers 3 stage polish. It's funny to think that I'll be weathering the car once it's assembled to make it look raced... I also machined new headlights ready for bulbs.... Here's a view I couldn't help but take a picture of Unfortunately I messed the paint up on the engine cover/wing.. I painted the white then masked the black section, no problems yet. I polished the surface to have a nice base for the decals and then clear coated everything. Apparently I must have waxed the surface as well which doesn't form the best base for clear coat Anyway, that's almost stripped now so hopefully I can paint it again this weekend and have some more progress to show you all. Thanks again for following this build!

I don't frequently get hit by bouts of jealousy but this build does it to me
A pleasure to follow, Rob

Re: 1/12 Tamiya Porsche 935 with SMS detail set
reading that you mixed something up, makes you human.......
I just like to mention that your accuracy about what you are doing (all the steps and masking doing the paint job; the thinning of the paint; your plan to make the paint dull) shows real skill - not only mechanically. But you seem to have some sort of "phantasy" in achieving different results. That is what I find amazing th most. Enough blibbering from my side. Now go ahead and finish this thing!! Robert

Looking fantastic Rob!
Can I ask you please - what type of clear resin did you use for casting the reservoir, and were you happy with it? All the products I've used end up with a sticky surface when cast! |

Re: 1/12 Tamiya Porsche 935 with SMS detail set
Hi Rob,
At last - a chance to contribute to this utterly glorious project! Strictly speaking, I'm not sure that the radio was always fitted in the works 935's in 1976 - I have photos here of the flat-nose cars at the Nurburgring, Le Mans and Watkins Glen, all clearly showing the radio aerial on the roof. However, at the start of the season at Vallelunga the normal-nosed car clearly has no aerial, neither is it shown on the flat-nose cars used in two Porsche posters at the end of the season. (ref. Porsche Racing Cars 1976 - 2005 by Brian Long). I can understand the benefit of having a radio at longer circuits such as Le Mans and the 'Ring, but maybe they left it out at the shorter tracks? The only shot I can find of a radio inside a works 935 is from the '78 Moby Dick - it looks like a large CB-type box mounted on the floor on the left-hand side of the cockpit, with a coiled lead running to 'something' which is tucked into a makeshift container to the left of the gearlever. No guarantee that the '76 cars were the same, but it's a start! I'll see if I can sort out a photo to post... ScratchBuilt |

Stunning build, since seeing your fantastic build I have purchased the 1:12 Martini, I dont have the coin for the SMS set (which i think is sold out) but your build is an inspiration to me, fantastic detailing, wheathering & build. Cant wait to see more
