2001 Lesabre Gas Gauge

My 2001 Lesabre's gas Gauge is not working correctly. Once it hits about half tank it just stays there. I am currently close to empty but my gauge shows half a tank.

Do I need to look in the gas tank? What should I do?

Actually Bo he could get a fuel level sending unit kit in which you replace that part only thus saving a bunch of money. Has the variable resistor, float, wiring harness and electrical connector jack. The AC Delco part number is SK1030. Around $85 from certain AC Delco parts suppliers. GM dealer is more expensive.

About a one hour total DIY after removing the fuel pump pod from the top of the gas tank via the access cover meaning the gas tank does not need to be dropped.

Ok let me get this straight.

1st off this isn't the whole fuel pump is it? Bloomin thing looks huge.

2nd off, for BNaylor what part exactly do I need to replace from that contraption?

By the way is that called a fuel sending unit???? or is the fuel sending unit just a smaller piece of the whole unit.

and lastly as I cringe How much do these things go for????

The pic Bo posted shows the complete fuel pump assembly with the fuel level sending unit which last time I checked could run up to $300 or more plus labor if you are not DIY capable.

In my pic the fuel level sending unit is the part shown separated from the fuel pump assembly with the float. As an option to reduce cost it can be replaced separately. You can get this part from an AC Delco parts supplier located in Flint, MI for around $85.00. If your fuel gauge is the only thing acting up and the fuel pump portion is good then this could be the best route to go to save money. I recall several Lesabre forum members with 2000 and up models did their own DIY and replaced the fuel level sending unit only.

Thanks Bob, for the superb advice, pics and money saving ideas; we all like to save some money if possible! Actually, there were several reasons I suggested a complete replacement & upgrade from the original AC unit. As we have found out, the original sending units are “failure prone” thus requiring replacement not once, but maybe several times during the normal life of the car. The Carter pump/sending unit suggested (in the link above) is much improved over the ACDELCO! In fact, if you purchase from Advanced, it would be much cheaper than buying the complete AC assembly from the Dealer. Finally, if you replace the pump assembly and sending unit, you gain the additional reliability of a new improved pump.

Personally, considering the complexity of the unit & labor involved to replace, I would spend the extra money for the complete Carter upgraded unit. That way, I would gain some additional comfort in knowing I had a new upgraded pump and sending unit. To me, that is worth 222 bucks, (cheap insurance) but may not be to everyone. I guess it depends on available funds & how long you plan to keep the car!

BTW, pic in post #2 edited to include price & part number for the 01 LeSabre Carter fuel pump/sender unit. Not bad at all!

i changed mine on 2000 buick lesabre just go inside trunk lift carpet there is an access panel you remove the screws from this i disconnected the battery took off gas cap then i just used a regular screw driver and a rubber hammer gently tapped big metal lock washer that holds pump assembly in tank i disconnected wires from it then pulled unit out through top of gas tank i then changed just the sending unit as the fule pump part was still working fine saved myself a lot of money just replacing the sending unit. put it back together in reverse o0f removal. works perfect a lot cheaper then getting gm dealer to do it you can get fuel sending unit fairly cheap at GmParts direct.com

sorry to bump this but don't want to make a new thread. I have 68k miles and my needle budges alot. If I shut the car off, sometimes when I turn it back on, the needle dropped 1/8 of a tank. It would recover over a few minutes though. Also, when I'm on the highway, the fuel range drops alot if I'm on a bending right (like a interstate or cloverleaf highway intersection). Is my fuel pump going bad or is this normal?

sounds like the float in tank and if you drop it i would go ahead and replace fuel pump.

i don't no who you was refering to? but if it's the float i was saying while you have tank droped i'd go ahead and put new pump in. but thats me that i would do if i had to drop tank.

Sorry Bo for posting after thread lock but to clarify since post can still be viewed by the membership.

Scrapper1, you do not drop the gas tank to replace the fuel level sending unit on a 2001 Lesabre. There is an access panel located in the trunk behind the rear passenger seat so fuel pump assembly removal is much easier.
