AF Group Build- Air Cooled!

Now that Tang assures us that the Ferrari 60th (61st?) anniversary group build is being wrapped up, it's time for the next one.

Some of us have been kicking around this idea for weeks now, and it seems just too cool not to do it as a group build- Aircooled Engines. Anything with an aircooled powerplant, any era, any scale. As always, it's not a contest- build along for fun! Due date, say a year or so from now- spring 2009ish. Porsches, VWs, early classics, etc. (even V-twins!). Full engine or curbside , your choice- but as this is an engine theme, we'll certainly hope to see lots of engines!

Here are some great aircooled kits- (I know this isn't all so if you can think of more, name them!)

Tamiya:
Citroen 2CV
Fiat 500/695
Porsche 959
VW Beetle '66
VW Kharman Ghia
Does the 956 (aircooled cylinders, but watercooled heads) count as aircooled? You decide!

Fujimi:
Porsche 356 (many to choose)
Porsche 911 (even more to choose)

Hasegawa:
VW Bus/Van (curbside, but cool)

So show us your boxers!! (No, not those boxers! )

And no Ferrari's!

Builds in Progress:
VW Beetle Porsche Engine- Whumbachumba
VW Beetle '66- Ferrari TR
Porsche 993 Turbo- MPWR
Porsche 959- ddtham

You missed the Hasegawa 1/24 Kubelwagen

I'm sure some creative hand can turn it into the VW Thing

Don't forget that IMSA versions of the 962 were fully aircooled until IMSA relented in '88 and let the Group C 962 engine in.

Didn't actually know that. But there's also the Fujimi 917, isn't there?

And we shouldn't overlook the Gunze BMW Isetta....

Would a current project count? If so I'd like to enter my Porsche 930.

Re: AF Group Build- Air Cooled!

I'm in as well. Choosing which car will be difficult though, got all Tamiya kits you mentioned except the 2CV...

Maybe this will help me over my buildersbreak...
Anyway, good luck setting it up!

Maybe as an idea, our own part of the forum where we place all our WIP and the instructions about the groupbuild in a sticky there?

Re: AF Group Build- Air Cooled!

Fantastic, Andy.
I'll do something: the plan would be a 961 full detail (should mount a 956 engine so like you said air cooled cylinders and water cooled heads), another couple of great build I planned wrom a whyle are the Rothmans 911 SC group4 (rallye kind, tarmac version) and obviously the Isetta?

Was the Messershmitt cub aircooled? Ok time to introduce the Aircooled gag: since here at AF we have also an aircrat/armour section.... there http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...lay.php?f=1807
I'm sure I'll find something for the Aircooled theme, something with wings, and not Red Bull...

Re: AF Group Build- Air Cooled!

Can I build a VW bug with a smallblock in it? It WAS air-cooled.

What about motorcycles? Are they allowed? I have some old Tamiya Ducati's, the 900ss and 900 MH replica.I believe these are both air cooled V twin engines.

Re: AF Group Build- Air Cooled!

I for one will be looking forward to participating in this group build. My plan will be to do to the Porsche 961 from Le Mans 1987.

I'll be using a combination of Tamiya's 959,

and the 961 kit.

And I'll be using the Studio 27 decal sheet for the Rothman's car

I plan on starting on this later this week. And Im looking forward to seeing others subjects.

Sure- I expect I'll incorporate my 993 as well. Hopefully I'll manage some thing else, as well.

Aircooled ones, definitely!

I suppose that's your decision. It's not a contest so I'm not expecting that we'll be doing many this is/this isn't judgments. Do you believe a smallblock belongs in with aircooled engines?

I suspect that yours may not be the only 961.

I'm also thinking of doing Tamiya's 959 (as a 959). Together with the 993, I figure they represent the ultimate evolution of the production aircooled engine. (Or, the ultimate evolution of the VW Beetle.... )

Extra temporary forums are rather difficult to arrange. But there's really no reason we can't use this thread for that purpose. Instructions will likely be kept to a minimum (Build something aircooled! Have fun!), I can add everyone's build threads to the first post, and we can have related discussions here.

All but the 2CV? That does make it tough to decide, doesn't it? (But don't discount the 2CV- it's another great little full detail kit!) Fujimi's Enthu Porsches make it even harder. They seem like an all out celebration of aircooled coolness. (And many are easily available again! )
