FYI - No longer using Napa Gold's on.....

either of my trucks.

Last 2 oci's on the Rodeo there has been start up clatter after truck has sat for more then 5+ hrs, I've NEVER had this issue before, I have had a filter cause excessive ticking, but NOT clatter at start-up. I let it go, not thinking much about it, cause it only lasts 3-15 seconds or so, and it's not every morning; the first oci this occured with was Rotella Synthetic 5w-40 an oil I've used on/off for 2yrs; the 2nd oci was with Maxlife 5w-30.

I had switched back to thinner oil thinking the oil was too thick, not realizing then, that it could have been the filter. Logic should have told me then that it was, as I have used 5w-40 many times without issue.

However, this last week the Toyota had started doing it too - same filter, different part number obviously. And Castrol GTX 5w-30, same oil we've used since it's 2nd oci after we bought it a year ago.

Oil needed changed on the Rodeo anyways, fresh batch of Rotella synthetic 5w-40 and now a PureONE filter, I don't remember trying this filter before. I know I've used a Puralator, so we'll see. So far, even after sitting for 5+hrs after changing the oil this morning, all's good.

The Toyota didn't need an oil change, but I DID change it's filter too, to a PureONE as well.

Let you all know more tomorrow morning, after it sits all night.

I've been using the Pureone filter on my Rodeo and Integra for a year.

There's alot to be said for just using a standar FRAM/Purolator filter and changing the oil every 3000 miles. I've seen several of the supposed "High Protection" filters cut open, and the amount of paper inside is alot greater. (AS they advertise on the boxes.) We all know what happens when you put 5 coffee filters in your coffee maker; you DO get CLEAN coffee, but it takes alot longer to get to the carafe. I'm not sure how much this does cause but I'd rather have the peace of mind of using spec filters and changing the oil more frequently. Just my opinion.

Re: FYI - No longer using Napa Gold's on.....

FRAM filters are actually the WORST filter you could use on an Isuzu. They don't filter and their flow rate is terrible.

In fact, when I bought my first Rodeo back in '91, it was actually written in the warranty papers that if a fram oil filter was used, it would void the warranty.

Personally, Fram's are FAR WORSE....I would never use them after knowing what I know now regarding Fram.

That said, I once used Fram for years on other vehicles, just never on these Isuzu engines.

I do like their Air Filters though.

BTW - I do and always have changed my oil every 3k miles.

I don't think that was the point of his post. If you want to start another debate about filters save it for different post.

Re: FYI - No longer using Napa Gold's on.....

I wonder if anything has changed in the production of the filters? I guess someone could email the company.

OR

Ramblin might just be paranoid....

BTW, I like the Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic Blend with the Pureone filter.

You could say I was pretty paranoid when my Toyota Tacoma started doing it too, this is one VERY quiet engine - one I still owe 4yrs of payments on

There have actually been a few people over on the BITOG board that have noticed the same thing with the Napa Gold filters.

I LOVE the Maxlife oils, but I will stick with the 10w-30 viscosity.

Re: FYI - No longer using Napa Gold's on.....

So is the Yota quieter now with the Pureone? The Pureones come with some decent feedback from users. The price difference b/w the regular Puralators and the Pureones is obvious..lol.

Well, now you've talked me out of using the Napa Golds (aka WIX). I might try cutting open my old Pureone filter.

Yes, both the Rodeo and Yota are MUCH quieter. Did the change out on Sunday, it is now Wednesday and I haven't heard a peep from either one.
