98 GMC Sierra 2500 starts then dies
This vehicle will turn over, start, and then immediately die. Later it may start and run fine. I have had this problem on and off for a number of years. I have replaced the fuel pump relay without results. Two weeks ago it happens again, this time it never starts so today I decide to replace the fuel pump but before I do I crank it up and it runs fine. A couple of years ago I decided to replace the ignition switch but couldn't get it out. I changed the position of the tilt steering and the problem went away for 2 years but here it is again. Any suggestions?

Welcome to AF. Get a fuel pressure gage on it and look for 60-65 when starting.

I have the same exact problem with my (early) '99 Chev C2500 / 5.7L Vortec. The truck is super clean and very well maintained. It cranks, starts, then immediately dies. I've burned up a starter trying to start it when this problem occurs. It seems to work best if I walk away from the truck, then come back in 10 minutes or so. It almost ALWAYS starts then. The truck will run fine for a long time, then it will start acting up again for a while, then it will be fine again. . . Fuel pressure has been tested normal (60-65lbs at start). I've tried wriggling the ign switch during the short time as it is running while it is dying and that doesn't seem to make any difference. I don't allow it to get lower than 1/4 fuel in the tank, so it's not sucking air. Fuel filter is near-new. Does anyone know if there is a known common problem, recall, or common malfunction of this nature with GM engines/systems that are similar?

Welcome to AF, when it dies and will not restart do you have good spark to the plugs and will it start by spraying carb cleaner or starting fluid into the intake?

Had this problem on my 99 5.7. It would happen on damp, foggy, or rainy days. Narrowed it down to the security system. Would turn the key on and watch the dash lights. If they would go through their sequence and go off except for the security light, it would not start. Had the "security system module" replaced, never had a problem in 4 years. It's up behind the radio somewhere. Had the local shop do it.
