96 Grand am : Need quick diagnosis

Have had no troubles with my car. Today has warmed up to 60 degrees when for the past few months its been 30 or below. Going back to 30 on friday. Just saying this incase something could be temp oriented.

I got in my car, turn it on, put it in reverse to get out of the driveway, stalls. Turned it back on, muffler was sputtering a bit, car sounds a bit sick, underpowered. IDLE in park, RPM meter is reading just below 1, usually its a little higher. Putting car in drive or reverse makes the car lose more of its power and possible stall.

Suspecting its not firing on all cylinders. Could it be the coils/plugs/quad 4 housing? have had trouble with the housing in the past.

Get back to me quickly, thank you.

Re: 96 Grand am : Need quick diagnosis

Please will someone help or reply on this?

Looked at the tower/changed coils/spark plugs. they were badly carboned.

Ran maybe 10% better, and for a second the RPM's fluxed to above 1 idle.

1.5 rpm idle is normal for my car.

it sounds like its running on 3 cylinders but missing on one.

checked fuel injection, fine.

----------

one cylinder is missing, someone please help.

Re: 96 Grand am : Need quick diagnosis

have a mechanic perform a compression check. Also check to see which cylinder is missing by feeling of the exhaust manifold near each cylinder (the bad one should feel a bit cooler then the others). Another way to check for a miss is to short the plug wire to ground. If that particular cylinder is missing the idle quality will not change. If that particular cylinder is firing the idle quality will worsen.

Re: 96 Grand am : Need quick diagnosis

This is being fixed at home.

Bought one of those scanners. Got the Code P0300 ( multiple/random misfires )

Changed coils, ignition housing ( tower ) spark plugs. All of ignition is new, there seems to be slightly more power, but this could be due to the new plugs.

Still studdering and at 1 rpm idle - .98 rpm idle.

Whats next? going to test fuel injectors today............ just want this fixed....

also I heard low gas would throw the P0300 code. The gas while testing and replacing parts has been decreasing rapidly.
