Ferrari 60th Anniv. Contest Entry - Dino 246 GTS Rally Car

Not quite sure WHERE this is going yet, so I strongly welcome suggestions and ideas.

I wanted to do a Ferrari not seen often, for the contest, but after scouring ebay and whatnot, I realized finding a Ferrari kit that ISN'T a Testarossa, Daytona, or modern Ferrari without spending a ton of money is impossible. So while the Dino is "more unique" than the usual suspects, it's still not that unique (there's several in the contest, in fact.)

So having said that, I figured I might try giving this Dino some sort of restored/vintage racing look--the kind of look a Dino that USED to be raced would have if the owner today participated in vintage road rallies.

This would let me keep the thing essentially box stock except for livery and maybe extra driving lights. I traded a Tamiya Porsche 911 GT1 to fellow AFer fap for this Fujimi Dino, but he also threw in a great sheet of Ferrari/Marlboro, presumably from a Ferrari F1 car. I think maybe I'll throw a few of them on the car, here and there, and also traditional vintage rally style door numbers.

Kinda like this:

I think I may stick with Italian Red, but I'm not sure... Either way, being red plastic, it likely won't be a light colour.

What do you guys think? Haven't decided on the wheels yet either, may just stick with stock...

Re: Ferrari 60th Anniv. Contest Entry - Dino 246 GTS Rally Car

I was watching a Ferrari DVD at home last night..... The 246 looks complete crap on Borani style wires, but actually looks pretty cool on suitably sized set of 5 spokes 'Star' wheels - maybe from a Hasegawa 328 ?

I think the 355 alloys will be just too big, and make the car look liker a roller skate....

Just my opinion however...

After getting them out of the package yes, I kind of agree they're a bit too big--and something a vintage rally racer is not likely to run anyway.

I'll dig through the parts box--I don't mind the stock ones though.

What about a resto-mod type dino? Like the type that runs in the various modern Targa type races? I'd say the 355's would be about perfect for that type of look (or any other modern race wheel design) as would modern brakes and interior safety devices.

Re: Ferrari 60th Anniv. Contest Entry - Dino 246 GTS Rally Car

Cool car. Not sure about motorsports, though. Classic rally events like the Mille Miglia are for road spec cars, not racing. And it's from the era when a street Ferrari could still be raced without mods.

I say go with the stock wheels. Or at least something small- the 355 wheels would look pretty goofy I think. If you see them in person, the Dino is a small car, and the 355 is rather large. Putting 355 wheels on a 246 would not exactly be like putting bicycle wheels on you rollerskates, but maybe not far off. The only other thing I'd seriously consider would be some other cool small vintage wheels- 14 or 15" Minilites would probably look really slick on a Dino.

(Maybe Fujimi's Panasports?)

Would be great for a classic rally look.

Is this the Enthu or curbside version?

Munari tried the Dino just before have hist Stratos: at the time they're thinking about the engine and they had some trouble with Enzo purchasing his Ferrari V6, I guess I have something around. You'll also check for Fulvia's rims or for the fabulos 4 spoke stuff from the 124 abarth. Also 131's rims would be oki

Curbside. And I agree, a vintage rally would be for street cars without any mods, which is why I was leaning towards stock + driving lights + decals. Minilites might be neat...

Actually the original wheels are just good to me, but if you're planning to change these I suggest some vintage style wheels for the dino, both Andy's and Gio's ideas are considerable.

Got the Italian Red laid down. Considering keeping this one a street car now...

Have you considered the wheels from the stratos rally car?
they ran the 308s on them when they took part in rallies back in the day.

Excellent idea--not exactly easy to find though.

i might have four fronts (the rears are too huge) laying around from the revell rebox of the rally car. I'll have a look. I'll PM you if I find them. You might even have use for the brakes/hubs to make fitting the wheels easier.
Although now that I think about it, I'm not sure if those will look right against that slinky 246 body.

Cool, let me know if you do, maybe we'll measure the backspacing and compare. Though honestly, the factory wheels painted gold I think will give it a retro rally flair anyway...

Re: Ferrari 60th Anniv. Contest Entry - Dino 246 GTS Rally Car

welp... Dupli-color clearcoat over Tamiya Italian Red? Doesn't work. Paint split in several places like a pair of old pants. Time to start over.

What's weird is, I could've sworn I used Dupli-color clear over other Tamiya colours, namely metallics.
