transmission fluid change
Hello Kia Owners out there. At the last minute, we had to borrow my father-in-law's 2005 Kia Sedona van for a short weekend vacation. Our reliable Chrysler T&C spit out the serpentine belt and I wasn't home to fix it. Anyway, the Kia has 31,000 miles and the transmission fluid (ATF) is the same color as the engine oil after 5000 miles of running. The tranny shifts OK, but I was expecting it to be a little pinker than it was. My father-in-law is a great guy, but vehicle maintenance is not high on his priority list. The engine oil hasn't been changed in 8000 miles, was almost a quart low and the tires were at 25 psi all around, and my wife drove the thing 500 miles this way.
What I need to know is, what type of ATF is recommended for this vehicle and what is the recommended ATF change schedule? ...and before you ask, NO, the owners manual is not in the car! Any help would be appreciated. Oh, on the subject of drain versus flush, flushing is not mandatory. Yes, it does remove most of the old fluid at once, but unless you have a rack and proper flushing equipment, a real hassle. My suggestion, for the do-it-yourselfers is to drop the pan once, refill, drive a couple hundred miles and drain again. Or, just drain and refill once every 15,000 miles and replace the filter every other drain. Remember, once you start to drive the car again, contaminates start to return in the fluid, so the benefit of flushing is short lived.

Re: transmission fluid change
30000 miles use SP3.
Dextron will tear up the trans and fast. I recommend flushing when ever possible.

Re: transmission fluid change
This is the first time I have ever heard of SP3 ATF. At the local auto parts store, all I could find was Dextron III/Mercon, ATF+3, ATF+4 and Type F. I use the first in my old Chryslers, my Volvo, my Father's Town Car and my Father-In-Law's Aerostar vans; and the next two types in my modern Chrysler products. I don't own anything that uses Type F.
Where in the world does someone get SP3 fluid? ...the Kia Dealer only?!? ..or are there other manufacturers that use this new fluid? Any additional information would be helpful.

Re: transmission fluid change
One more questions, is SP3 fluid the same color red as all other ATF, or a different color? I'm worried because the ATF in my Father-In_Laws Kia looks brown at 32,000 miles. If it started out red, it ain't red anymore.

Re: transmission fluid change
does anyone has instruction how to change the tranny fluid for sedona? I read the valvoline book at pepboys suggest remove the tranny hose from tranny to cooler, start the engine for 1 min or until it stop drainning, then fill the new fluid at the stick hole. It sound scary to drain the fluid while the engine is on. I don't think the tranny has a drain plug at the bottom. Is there anyone know how to change it?

Re: transmission fluid change
Recommend you buy the fluid at the dealer -- $6.85 / quart, takes 15 quarts. This car as a tranny cooler. The same system cools the transaxle.

Re: transmission fluid change
transmission flud is actually clear when it's made, they dye it red. Dye turns brown pretty easily. Clutch material only adds to the color. Flushing with a machine is the best route, a drain and fill will get you about 4 quarts of fluid changed.
