The engine is based on the 5 liter that is standard in the S500. It is modified by AMG (Aufrecht (founder), Melcher (partner), Grossaspach (Aufrecht's hometown)). Try the following URL for details.

E 55 AMG
As a mercedes tech, I am speaking from experience. In case you haven't noticed all Benzes come with a five speed automatic. Except the new C coupe and slk 230. The transmission is the same in all cars albeit with different clutch packs and gear ratios. AMG makes the transmission shift much faster than any other auto tranny on the market. And it will bark the tires with ESP turned off while shifting into 2nd. The manumatic will do anything you want it to. including bouncing off the rev limiter in all gears.. Automobile magazine did a comparison when the M5 came out, the E55 is cheaper stops faster rides smoother and will almost out run the M5, and is a zillion times more reliable. And you don't have to wait 1,200 miles before your fist full throttle application. I'd personally give renntech a call and for 5,000 to 7,500 can install a Euro spec 6-speed gear box, If you can afford the car, you can afford this. All European cars are available with stick shifts. Emission regulations doesn't permit them into the US.

Thanks for the inside inside point of view. I am very happy with the E55 and especially the transmission. I understand that most serious drivers would prefer a true manual, but for my driving the manumatic gives me the best of both types. I use the E55 as primary transportion, not as a rally car. If I wanted a rally car, I would have picked something with two doors that weighed a lot less than 3700 pounds. But if you're driving a "real" sports car and you pull up next to me at a stop light on an empty road, don't rev your engine unless you want a whippin'.

AMEN! that's the way its supposed to be. Mercedes is probably the highest quality car you can buy without going into megabucks supercars. And they have the performance needed to hang with those supercars too. IF that still isn't enought there's always renntech and Brabus. keep in mind though that they will viod your factory warranty. All in the name of fun and speed.

Granted BMW ARE alot more orientated towards driving, not JUST because it comes manual but also if you want to shut off all the BS driving aids you can, but in all benz's you cant. (even when you "shut them off" they're still running, just at 60% productivity) [/b][/quote]
They aren't running at 60% the engine management merely allows full throttle to be applied which will easily overpower the rear brakes as they try to keep the wheels from spinning. And why would any body buy a 6-speed car that doesn't allow you to powershift? My friends a BMW tech, the hydraulic clutch doesn't allow a powershift while bouncing off the limiter, it just slips the clutch until it wears out(you'd have to try to power shift all the time though) it is a 900 dollar clutch plus labor, a benz's auto tranny is gauranteed for the 50,000 warranty and the fluid is good for 100,000 miles , why complain? You get the best of both worlds except without the third pedal.

I am fortunate enough to own a 2001 ML55 AMG and a 2002 S4. Overall the best performane is in the ML55 becaus it has alot mor torque then the S4 but The S4 sticks to the road better

Sure its fair to compare the 2. If the M-class kicks the audi's ass, then what's to compare?

No, you really cant compare the two cars.....like gang$tarr said, one is an SUV and the other is Sports Sedan....
And for the record the S4 would PASTE the ML.....

but for the fun of it, who cares? I would rather own the fastest suv currently in production, than a little 4 door sedan, wouldn't u? And u can cruise at 155 mph ALL day long.
