89 Eldo: What's with the STOOPAD "vat" system and shit keyrack?
89 Eldo: What's with the STOOPAD "vat" system and shit keyrack?
I get a good deal on an Eldo, then get it home to turn the FAAKEN ignition off, and the Fokker won't turn off! I jam it again and again, then suddenly as I'm turning it counter-clockwise the thing pops and spins freely. Round and round.. and I'm thinkin what did I get myself into? I gotta pull a battery cable to shut the thing off! Sooo.. I go down the following weekend to several pay-to-get-in wrecking yards and start dinkin' with the steering columns. I'm thinking okay big deal with their Vehicular Anti-Theft keyed system.. with the random "you probably have a resistor chip in the key with a value of anywhere from one to fiftee" and stuff. I'll defeat that by desoldering the chip-thing outta the key and into them white wires "VOILA" and screw it, done. But what happened once I get the lock out was totally unexpected. I thought that would be a cinch to fix once the column is opened up to remove the lock, but it wasn't the locks' cam-gear endpiece that messed up. It was some diecast piece of shit that is shaped like a "U" with geared rackteeth on it which the lock cylinder rolls up and down upon. THAT thing is cracked, so when you try to shut it off like that, the cylinder has no resistance because it now passes the full extention of that rackpiece. So when I get down to these wrecking yards looking for this U-piece, I find them either missing or in similar messed-up condition and I don't like it. Was this thing recalled by GM and can I get some dealer to deal with it? I'm lazy, I don't go for this working hard stuff normally..

This must be the crappiest tilt ignition design because I opened up a 91 Eldo column, and that rack-thingie is located further away from the key cylinder.

Screw Cadillac, this system sucks - I had to buy a whole steering column $30 bucks.
Big Deal. This shows what low hanging of a fruit you are in the mechanical tree cuz you coulda saved me some money.

What an "A" hole, 30 dollars!? shut your trap and buzz off, yor entire post is childlike, rife with grammatical nonsense , lack of basic common sense and reason. "Rack thingie," this is what our future is, good luck!!
