98 3000GT Misfire

Well bought the car on Sunday drove home all the way from Little Rock, Arkansas to Alexandria, LA which is about 350 miles, car ran like new no problem whatso ever. Had it detailed today and took it to go pick up my daughter after school. We left Wal-MArt and she started acting sluggish, press gas and it started to die. Check engine light came on and for several minutes it would do nothing. Then it ran alright. I had put fuel injection cleaner in it when it was filled up in Little Rock with super unleaded. Took it to Autozone and the code read misfiring. I had ordered new plugs and wires already along with a complete timing belt kit on Wed, should be here tomorrow. ANy suggestions as what the problem could be. Thanks,Gary

Re: 98 3000GT Misfire

Almost sounds like your MAF sensor got disconnected, but that doesn't explain how it turned on again.

It's the fuel injector cleaner, mine did it too, #3 misfired at 88 mph. I read somewhere not to use the injector cleaner in the 3000s. I'm sure people use it and just one of those oddities in the universe when it happens to you.

Bzzzt. Whoever said that is stupid. Our injectors are no different than any other injectors. I have used injector cleaner numerous times and have zero ill effects. When your car got detailed did they clean the engine bay?? It sounds to me like they sprayed it down and a coil pack or a wire got wet causing your misfire. It happened to me once. I got my distrubutor wet. Car had zero power. I had to get towed behind my uncles Ram to make it the 1/2 mile up my hill.

Re: 98 3000GT Misfire

Talked to the guy i got it from and he accidentally forgot to tell me that it did this to him a couple of times before. I bought it from a repo auction that my brother set up there computer system for. I only paid $4500 for it the body is mint, interior mint, with dvd player. 110k miles, carfax clean. Anytime I buy a used car I always pull a complete tune-up, timing belts, fluids, transmission filter.I did not know that changing the spark plugs, wires would require so much time. Well I do not mind spending about a $1000 to get her running good. My exwife offered me $7k for her and I found a 94VR4 for $5800 with supposebly a JDM motor with 49k and since it was out he went ahead and had timing belts, headers and a borla exhaust put on but now has to go overseas and cannot take car with him. i am waiting for him to send me receipts and paperwork on the motor and mechanic work before I decide to get it. I usually work on my Quest and Starion myself and what I cannnot do my neighbors exhusband has a mechanic shop that does the rest for me. Weare going to put it on his computer Monday and see whats up and he is doing the timing belts and tensioners, water pump etc. so maybe the problem can be found. How do we post pics on here? Thanks,Gary

To post pics, either get them up somewhere else on the web, or you can host on here in the 'my gallery' section. Once it's on the web somewhere, to insert it into a post just type in [img]www.whatever.com[\img] (except use the opposite slash that I did in my example)

As far as your problem, $20 says your detailer degreased the engine with a power washer and didn't pay enough attention to keeping it away from the plugs wires/coil pack. (if they are in need of replacement, moisture will definantly cause an instant misfire) I've seen it happen hundreds of times with new guys at my old job.

He never opened the hood, was doing it before, guy I got car fom convientely forgot to mention. I am changing the wires and plugs this week so hopefully that is it. I put on a cold air intake yesterday and it started idling rough, I had removed the honeycomb just like I did on my Quest. Would this make a difference? Thanks,Gary

Re: 98 3000GT Misfire

Some have experienced issues after removing the honeycomb. I personally would replace it.

not to mention by removing the honeycomb, some of the air that flows in will not be metered, making the car run leaner.

Oh god. I thought he'd left.

Please, please, PLEASE spell correctly! At least use correct grammar, it will make it many times easier to read and understand what you're saying.

I'm going to return to drinking, but not post again until I've sobered up, and become proficient in English, because I know the moderators wont tolerate this crap anymore

I think that's the jist of it.
