I believe you mean in addition to the Trac Off and ABS lights, your Service VEHICLE Soon light is on. The Alero's have both: a Service Engine Soon light and a Service Vehicle Soon light. With the three lights you're talking about, have a bad wheel bearing or speed sensor at one of the wheels. Once you figure out which wheel the fault is coming from, you will need to replace the entire hub assembly.

I'm not sure exactly how to locate which wheel the fault is at, but maybe some of the other guys can help you out. The only way that I know is to hook it up to a GM scan tool. When my speed sensor went out, my car was still under warranty. The dealership pulled a code that said "excessive right front wheel spin". If you have a bad speed sensor, the code that your car will have logged will be similar to that.

Am I crazy or did you say the whoel hub needs to be replaced? Can't the bearing just be pressed out and a new one put in? I would like some info on diagnosing exactly what wheel bearing it is. Check out my post from a day or two back, entitled "alero abs not working..."

Yes...you read correctly. The entire hub ASSEMBLY needs to be replaced. It is all an enclosed, sealed unit in which the speed sensor and bearing are not serviceable.

The exact same thing just happened to me yesterday. I am taking my car to the dealership tomorrow, I will post the result tomorrow evening. This is just something else to add to the long list of troubles I have had with this car.

Because it is a SEALED assembly. You can't dismantle or service it and because of this GM and aftermarket suppliers only sell the entire hub.

Re: ALERO OWNERS Anyone have anti lock and off trac light on at same time?

Good evening everyone, Well I took my 2000 Alero to the dealership this morning, and yes it is the wheel bearing, it is also the wheel bearing wiring harness. Then the list goes, you see those warning lights aren't just for the wheel bearing. I also need to replace plugs and wires because antifreeze has been leaking thru my engine therfor I was having a misfire plus a broken tie rod end as well as a multitude of other problems totalling a cost of $3500 (canadian). No this isn't because I am a girl since I do know my way around a car. Buyer Beware!!! Aleros suck!!!
T PS the wheel bearing alone is $800 for the part plus install.

Eff that...buy the hub assembly and the wire harness from GMPartsDirect.com. They have WAY better prices and have an independent shop do the work.

jeremy- how come that catalog is down on gmpartsdirect? I have never seen this site before, but it looks like a good way to save a few bucks. Can you only find items by part #'s or can you look them up by the vehicle? Any idea how much a hub assembly costs on that site?

Re: ALERO OWNERS Anyone have anti lock and off trac light on at same time?

$800 plus install!!! The Dealership in Michigan quoted $300 parts and labor for one.

I did both front wheels on my 2000 Alero and I got the bearing/Hub assembly from NAPA for $105 each with a lifetime guarantee! I don't know if I got bad ones or what because the lights came back on about 3000 miles later. At the time I didn't realize I had a lifetime guarantee, so I went a long time with the lights on. I ended up taking it to dealership and they told me the right side was bad. (and wanted $300 to fix it). I said no thanks, and found my receipt and realized I had a lifetime guarantee. I got the new part and put it on the right side and when It worked for about a mile and the lights came on again. I did a resistance test on the new one and the one on the other side and they were different. So I took the other side off and got a free replacement and the resistance was the same as the other one. that was 20,000 miles ago and still no lights. I can do one in about 45 minutes now with all the practice.
