2001 grand am has high idle at start up
Get in the car anytime, morning, noon,or night, and when it starts up it will idle about 2000 rpm, then slowly come down to about 1000rpm.
does this everytime, also notice at low speed it seems to shift hard. It has been doing this for a few weeks, I changed the trans fluid and it still does it. The high idle is what I am really wondering about???? |

Re: 2001 grand am has high idle at start up
Check for a vacuum leak as this can cause high idle. You may have a cracked one that is not obvious.
Also check and clean the idle air control motor located on the side of the throttle body. It may be dirty and sticking in the open position. Remove it and spray with throttle body cleaner. Do not move the pintle when you have it out. Allow to dry and then reinstall. |

I had this problem with my 2000 Grand Am SE. Took it to the Pontiac garage and they first told me it was the idle air control. Replaced that, not the problem. Took it back and found that the computer had went bad. $300 bucks later problem fixed.
