Just a suggestion but before you go tearing the dash apart try looking behind the passenger side of the dash behind the glovebox area for the Low Frequency Amp (LFA). You'll have to remove the passenger side lower kick panel. '97.5 - '03 GPs with the mid grade 8 speaker sound system have it located there.
Checkout old links below:

And if you need to do work with or replace the Head Unit here's another helpful link which also covers dash panel removal.

Re: speaker amp
The GM computer is very vague as to the location of the amp. I believe it is in the dash behind, but slightly above and to the drivers side of, the radio, but another illustraion shows it near the BCM, which is near the parking brake pedal on the drivers side.

Out of curiousity Rich, what does your computer show for LFA location specifically for a '98, '99 and '00 GP?

Re: speaker amp
It's kinda bizarre, if you look at the audio illustration, it shows it kinda half-ass behind the radio. If you look at the instrument panel illustration, it shows it down by the BCM.

yeah, i found mine behind and slightly above the stereo on the drivers side, luckily my roommate's a certified car audio installer for infinity sound, so he replaced it for me for a case of beer lol. he's also the one who resoldered my hud.
