Transmission fluid leaking through vent hole

I have a 2001 Regal GS that is pumping trans fluid through the vent hole on top of the trans. Can anyone help?

How's the ATF fluid level when the cars fully warmed up? Have you ever changed the Dextron III out and put in a new screen filter?

I agree with Bob, your filter may be partially plugged causing it to force the fluid out. An overfilled transmission will also cause this problem.

If you mean the regular trans filter yes I have changed that. As for checking the fluid level when the car is warm, as soon as I start the car fluid starts pumping up through the vent tube. If I put it in gear or rev the engine it creates a nice little fountain of atf and soon a river forms under the car.

Are you sure it's not overfilled. I noticed the ATF level in a 4T65E tranny is always higher when the engine is off or cold.

When the engine is fully warmed up is there ATF still coming out of the vent?

So I have now drained the pan, installed a new filter and filled with 3 qts of fluid...and it is still coming out of the vent. It seems something is stopping the fluid from going back to the pan causing it to back up in the trans and come out the vent. Does the trans cooler in the radiator ever get blocked? If not I am guessing that it is an internal problem (pump, flow back holes plugged, torque converter...)

Sorry to hear that, not good. I agree with you, sounds like an internal problem. I don't think that that it's a flow problem to the radiator if the tranny is operating correctly otherwise. I'd take it to a good dependable transmission shop or the dealer only if under a warranty. Good luck!

Re: Transmission fluid leaking through vent hole

I found this information which may be helpful to you. It covers the 4T65E tranny on '97 - 2005 GM vehicles. According to this TSB the fix is a new transmission case cover gasket/channel plate gasket.

Hope the info helps and good luck!

Re: Transmission fluid leaking through vent hole

Update: Seems when I had the transmission rebuilt 13,000 miles ago the valve body bolts were finger tight. This slowly stopped fluid from going where it was suppose to and finally out through the vent hole. So after another trans rebuild regal is running great.

Thanks BNAYLOR for all the information.
