Re: what oil filter do you guys use??

I guess i am in the minority on this one. I use an amsoil remote filter. Because I do I lot of traveling to the river and like the ideal of the extra oil capacity. When the temp outside is 120+ and haulin my my toys.

Re: what oil filter do you guys use??

While i posted a while back about my good experience with K&N filters and Castrol Syntec in my Suburban (about to try switching from !0W-30 to 5W-30, my HD Melling pump makes too much pressure when cold).

Wanted to mention that in my kids' 200,000 mile BMWs I've settled on Purolator filters from Pep Boys and Castrol High Mileage 20W-50 plus a quart of Lucas - seems to work great!

I just installed a pure 1 from purolator and some royal purple 5w-30 in my '03. Going on a road trip soon, so i will see if gas mileage improves. Also will be driving back with a hypertech III and hopefully an exhaust. Merry Christmas to ME!!!

Re: what oil filter do you guys use??

About 500 miles ago I switched from Castrol GTX 5w30 and a Fram Tough Guard filter to Mobil 1 5w30 with a Mobil 1 filter. Very pleased so far. The first thing I noticed was cold weather startups were much improved. Before the Mobil 1 if it was around 30 degrees or so the truck would labor to turn over... now, in the same cold it might as wll be 100 degrees outside, the motor starts up quick. I'm taking my truck on a 300 mile trip tomorrow so I plan on comparing gas milage to check for any difference.

Re: what oil filter do you guys use??

well i havnt changed my oil since i bought my new truck, but i did use napa gold(wix) and 5 quarts of valvoline max life with a quart of lucas. i also had a high volume oil pump so i was told by a couple people to use a wix filter, it didnt leak which was great. speaking of oil a buddy of mine used shell rotella t in his 88 350 and he tore that apart last week, said it was VERY clean, no sludge buildup or anything, this motor was ran hard and had 150k miles on it, i have started thinking about using rotella t now, although it is kind of expensive

Re: what oil filter do you guys use??

Puro's all the way...

I wouldn't ever run a Fram, or any of the re-labeled ones (Pennzoil, Quaker State).. you'll see why below..

Opinions kill motors, do an analysis on your own:
http://www.blackstone-labs.com

I did an analysis on my oil after 5000mi. (which is my normal interval) on the following oil filters:

Purolator
Amsoil (I think this is actually a Baldwin filter)
K&N
Mobil 1
AC Delco
Napa (Wix)

I used Castrol GTX 10w-40 for all oil changes

There was little difference between them. Every car/truck will be different according to driving style, climate, etc.. so my results will do nothing for you other than show you that they were all relatively equal under similiar conditions...

I also did an analysis on a Fram after only 3000mi... It was incredibly worse than the others (at less mileage) and why I will never touch any vehicle of mine with another one..

--------------------

Some other tidbits:

IIRC, SuperTechs were made from Champion Labs.. but I think they have since switched to also being re-labeled Frams..

I also used to use the Puro L20123 filter for my truck ('00 Sierra 5.3L). It was the same as the L25288 but longer. I since found out that they no longer make the L20123 filters.. I can still find the Napa (Wix) versions around (P/N 1045)

Re: what oil filter do you guys use??

I posted 217,000 miles on a 1998 Chevrolet 1500 w/ 350 C.I. engine, using Castrol 10W30 and Sam Waltons finest oil filters @ $2.50 per. New owner has mentioned no mechanical problems in the last year of ownership.

MT,

I quickly scanned those links, relatively old since it didn't confirm AZ's statement

i've noticed the part numbers are similar on Super Tech, STP, & Fram... I know for a fact that autozone's private label w/ that orange grip paint are Frams

soo, once again,

Re: what oil filter do you guys use??

Thanks to everyone who provided some real scientific information (by cutting open the filters yourself) or by providing links to others who have. Unfortunatly, i must say that i've typically used Fram for many years...not because of price but because I thought they were better filters based on childhood information. But like many of you, I love my truck (the wife says I'll replace her long before my truck...probably true. The trucks more reliable, hahaha) Anyhow, I sure won't be using Fram again...I can get Puralator up the street. Thanks again everyone.

Re: what oil filter do you guys use??

I have a 07 Silverado V8 4.8---I went to get a oil filter and Advantage auto did not have them. I wanted a Purolator Pure One. They had to order one, part number L12222. They looked up a 06 vs 07 and they are NOT the same.
Anybody know why the oil filters are different from 06 to 07??.
The other filter for it is AC/Delco PF48 which they did not have either.

Thanks for any commets!!

Re: what oil filter do you guys use??

what effect does an oil filter have on MPG? Thats new to me. I use the Mobil1 Extended performance filters, with great results.

Re: what oil filter do you guys use??

On the review of the Purolator Pure One oil filter at this site http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html he was concerned of a possible flow restriction but the graph below shows the flow rate of the Pure One to be about the same as the Wix. I think that the Pure One is one of the better oil filters.
